Playing my second shot on the par 4 16th, I hooked it into the bushes and thick rough - hit a provisional but found my ball, it landed exactly where I thought, and just playable. I knocked it out about 20ft and chipped on the green, marked my ball and whilst cleaning it realised it wasn't my ball.

So after playing a ball that wasn't mine twice, I said to my playing partners that I was disqualifying myself.

Did I do the right thing, was I too hasty and should I have played my second shot again? Although I wouldn't of remembered exactly where to play from, which is why I took the only option I thought open to me.

I've never been in this situation before, so any thoughts appreciated.

Firstly.

Very honest of you.

Secondly.

I don't know what the technically correct answer actually is. But I would of thought that each shot played with the wrong ball was a 2 shot penalty.

This would mean though that you would have been able to complete your comp and just handed in a higher score because of the penalty points.

Alternatively complete the round and ask the pro what you should do.

But credit for your honesty though.

Should've said "played wrong ball" to partners then taken a 2 shot penalty then gone back to look for your original ball. If you couldn't find it go and play the provisional. Not complicated.

If you'd tee off on the next hole before you realised it was the wrong ball then that's a DQ I think.

You have until the next tee to correct any error like this.......I think :D

Birdieman has it right - you should have gone back to look for and play the original, or play the provisional. All done under 2 shot penalty. (Doesn't matter how many times you hit the wrong ball, none of the shots count and it's just the 2 penalties). And if you didn't correct the mistake before playing from next tee - then you are DQ. (all rule 15.3)

Rule 15-3B - strokeplay

If a competitor makes a stroke or strokes at a wrong ball he incurs a penalty of 2 shots. The competitor must rectify his mistake by playing the correct ball or by proceeding by the rules (playing the original or if lost playing the one hit with the 4 iron). If he fails to correct the mistake before making a stroke on the next teeing ground, or in the case of the last hole or the round, declares his intention to correct his mistake before leaving the putting green he is disqualified.

Strokes made by the competitor with a wrong ball do not count in his score.

Where is Sid the rules guru when you need him

Thanks Guys, for all your comments, it's as clear as mud now :D. Seriously, it's a steep learning curve, where rules are concerned, and will certainly know what to do next time.

There's always a positive though, it really wasn't my best ever round!

:) :D

What to do next time?

Declare to your partners that you need to check if the ball is yours. If it is replace in the original lie - if not, bag it!!. I mean look for the markings and try to return it to the rightful owner!!

Or just bag it........

Isnt it a two shot pen for each time you play the wrong ball and to go back to the place where you started from with the wrong ball and play with the correct ball? either way I would have NR'd it.

We played a society on Friday and one lad went into the trees and so did I, I found my ball and chipped out and he went from a maxfi into the woods and ended up with a top flite on the green because we had walked on after looking for it.. Wasnt the only time said fella cheated grr

Nope; just the two penalty shots in total - doesn't matter how many times you hit the ball before you realise it's a wrong 'un

Cool, once played with a fella that let me do this, he knew it was his ball and even pointed to the bloody thing as if to say its mine then once I chipped it he pulled me.
