Due to the recent lovely weather for growing grass, the fringe grass around our greens has become quite lush and wiry. Yesterday in a competition I managed three double hits trying to chip out of the stuff with a wedge, which didn't exactly help my score (1 stroke penalty each time). The ball tends to pop up and then you catch it again with the follow through. Does anybody have any tips for avoiding double hits? :mmm:

Sounds like poor technique. I did it the other day and I felt like i hadnt tried to hit it hard enough

More loft and keep the club accelerating through the strike (Ball goes up, club goes forward)?

^^^ This.

Your club should be accelerating at the point of striking the ball; I would guess your downswing lacked 'purpose' on those three double-hits.

hit more greens........ :D

seriously gareth has the right answer.

Actually, this is the wrong answer. The extra loft causes the ball to go upwards and not away from the clubhead (in a forward direction) quick enough so it is still within range as the clubhead follows through. LESS loft will propel the ball forward more quickly causing less chance of a double hit.

But the 2nd part is correct, you need to accelerate the club through the hitting area

Don't decelerate on the down swing

As Gareth has said keep accelerating through the ball.

In the very wiry thick stuff I tend to "Pop" the ball out with the club stopping 2-3 inches after the strike, still in the grass.
The ball comes out running so need to allow for this and probably best to practice before you get on the course ;)

Had a couple of these yeterday. Not double hits but nearly. Very frustrating especially as I was very near the green.

Found a few useful videos on YouTube.

I think this is the conventional view.

More loft makes sense to me. You have to accelerate through the ball and get the ball up.

However less loft might work too

Like it! But I guess you have to be very near the green.

Whatever techniques you use it needs to be practised.

Expect to see a lot of chucked chips at the US Open next week if the fringe rough is the usual USGA standard.

The 'stubbed' technique works for me - as does the flop if it's appropriate. Key, for me, is to be positive (bordering on aggressive) rather than simply 'guiding' the club as I normally do. And I generally use the Sand Wedge - not a club i normally consider for chipping except in this sort of situation.
