And to top it off, his company have given him 2 weeks off to prepare and given other members of staff the day off and bought them tickets for the Thursday to go and watch him

Yep - like every other story on Daily Mail online this is a rehash of stuff that's been on the internet for a couple of days at least - another paper had this story six days ago.

Great story though and his boss came out of it well when he offered whole factory day off - and a free ticket if they wanted to go to watch John

Wow that's awesome. I watched "The Grestest Game Ever Played" the other night so my money's on this guy to win it all :p :D

lol, anyone know his actual odds, probably 5000/1..........if I was his boss I would have a tenner on him as well. Great story and boss.

1500/1 on betfair, same odds as sandy lyle and mark o'meara! longer shots are Nick Faldo, Mark Wiebe and Paul McKechnie.

jeebus thats unbelievable (fig of speech) I'd rather put a tenner on Faldo. I reckon his goal is dont muck up and try to make the cut.

Really hope he does well and will be following with interest

1000/1 with Coral and worth an each way pound, I saw Faldo somewhere for 5000/1! To be honest I'd rather have a punt on the forklift guy.....

It's not just The Open that has this sort of story though.

Cambo qualifying an winning the US Open in 2005, Simon Griffith qualifying this year, Double Heart Transplant recipient Erik Compton qualifying and finishing 2nd!

PGA has its share of stories too, with spots available for Club Pros.

Only The Masters misses out - but that's an invitation, so surprises are rather suppressed.

That Erik Compton story is incredible, here's a guy on his 3rd heart (2 transplants) not playing in any transplant competition but teeing it up with the best golfers in the world week in and week out and placing 2nd in the US Open!.Every time I see that guy play I want him to win and I'll be taking the 250/1 on him to win the Open.As for Cambo prior to his win he was no forklift driver....
