In one of the Chambers Bay threads it was mentioned that the USGA likes to move the teeing positions around quite a bit during the 4 days, often causing apoplexy in our somewhat delicate PGA pros.

Yesterday I played our course after a big board comp, and my pps remarked on how all the tee positions were basically as far back as possible. There were no cheeky forward tees to move players gently from their normal experience of the course.

I suspect that this is pretty normal, but wondered if there were any examples of rocking up on comp day and finding a couple of tees somewhere odd and thought provoking.

The pros don't have to consider the course being of sufficient length to be qualifying for handicap purposes.

Ours plays with the set up by not cutting the tees for a week ;)

We play all our honour board events off the plates at the very back of the comp tees. Other comps they will move the tee around a little but to be honest they don't really do much with them. It's the pin placements that they use to make the course tougher or play easier

You'll not find an "odd tee position" on a "comp setup" as the "tee markers" will officially need to be within "1-2 club lengths or 6ft" foward of their marker posts, the only reason that you'll find the markers at the front of the tee (or indeed any other part of the teeing ground) on a normal day is to relieve the teeing ground of excessive wear !...

Tee positions don't normally bother me, but in Saturdays invitation comp all our tee markers were as far back as possible.
Which is normally ok, but we now have Tee information / advertising boards at the back centre of some tees.
The 4 of us found this distracting as your back swing only misses the sign by a foot or so.
I'll be having a word or three.

What makes you think that tee markers need to be within 6' of the official blocks?

You can alter a 'measured course' by 100yds before it affects the comp, and in some cases up to 300yds but Css must be altered accordingly, check congu book out.

Thats correct my friend but only under certain circumstances you can't just go out and shorten/lengthen a course by 100yds because you feel like it so I'm correct in saying that the markers "should" be within 2 club lengths or 6ft of their measured posts under "qualifier rules" unless conditions don't allow it !...

FB, Geez i hate writing a reply, would much rather say it, what i was 'trying' to say was i learned about the course measurement thingy myself tonight after looking through the Congu book, not that you were wrong 'my friend'. Where's my smiley face gone?

I still don't buy into this, most if not all medal comps will be off the white stones, as such you will have far more than a couple of club lengths to play to as the yellows on some tee's could be 20yds forward of the whites and still form an overall measured course, as such the leeway to move the tees around off and forward of the white blocks could be significant IMO.

I disagree with your opinion Homer, I think the tee blocks can play a significant part in your preferred tee shot when the whole width of a teeing area is not used. The tee blocks can be placed only on the right side or left side of the tee area bringing immediate lines of trees into play and thus not being able to play fully your desired driver shape and thus having to club down to be safe thus making the hole longer or at least a tougher 2nd shot then comes into play.

I think tee blocks moved around and especially when squeezed to 1 side can make a significant difference to some holes.

Not really, we only have a couple that are wide enough to go sideways one being the 5th so if its an important comp it will be right edge so you have to drive over the Moray Firth. All the others are long and thin and the Blue are set at a diff angle slightly which catches people out.

the Greens set are is the main thing, you could tuck every pin away so its almost impossible to get to.

When our greenkeeper's wife had a baby, we used to say we could tell when the little one had kept him awake all night, as the holes were cut in really stupid places
