Shorter course I can understand, but the benefit of LCP to club golfers surely depends on the state of the course. We have LCP in place but the benefit is purely that you can clean mud off your ball on the rare occasion it gathers any. It is very rare that you can improve your lie within 6 inches. If the fairways are patchy during winter I can kind of see your point but would argue that all you are doing is giving yourself the same lie you would expect during the summer so the score is effectively the same.

Well I've never played from a fairway divot while LC&P has been in force.

To be honest Rob irrelevant of what everyone else says I think it does. People say it doesn't for certain reasons but those reasons are flawed IMO.

Shorter Course
The course may be a bit shorter on paper but when you take into account the ball does not get a lot of run and it flies less due to the colder temperatures I find it evens itself out. At most places I have found that my driver will end up more or less in the same place as it would in summer. So that is that taken care of.

LPC
So you can lift the ball take all the mud from it and place in a position as you would expect in summer, not plugged or covered in mud. That is that taken care of.

Other things that happen in winter like, soaking wet bunkers that make bunker shots a little bit more difficult. Soaking wet rough that is harder to get a good strike out of. The cold weather that makes you uncomfortable. Lots of things to make the game harder in winter and unless you are playing on a course that is much shorter than normal then I think it can be more difficult.

But hey that is just my opinion, no doubt someone will argue back every point i have made.....

Well done Rob and good shooting...

100% agree with everything you have said there

And how often have you played from one in summer? If I've had to play from more than 5 divots in my life I'd be surprised, I certainly don't remember the last time I landed in one.

Irrelevant, the minute you can take the ball in hand all records are null and void. What's your course record, I bet it wasn't set in January with lc&p in force on a shortened course?

Having Played 7 under my handicap and with 87 my first round under 90 this weekend I have to say it counts. We were on winter greens which are tiny, along with the lack of run due to the course being wet I was really happy. Well done on your achievement, now you can move on with the belief that you can do it in Summer.

I don't know, it is a good round yes, you have overcome the winter conditions of poor greens etc... But the course is shorter. I personally don't bother to publicly discuss these scores, just bank it for analysis and why it was good so that I can build on it. I think best scores should be under medal condition or handicap card, there are no gimmes on these.

I'm sorry but if you were on temps all the way round it's hardly a PB, you've obviously played well but it's clutching at straws to call that your first sub 90. As said before, put it in the confidence memory bank for the Summer but don't count it, it will mean so much more when you do it for real.

There is no definitive answer

IMO any score counts because whenever you play there will always be obstacles to overcome

You still have to hit the ball well , still have to put the ball into hole , some temp greens are awful and it's actually harder to put the ball in the hole.

I shot a 69 the other week with pick and place - it counts for me. Pick and place balances out conditions you don't get in the summer.

To the people who have shot under 80 and 90 in recent weeks - well done on your new PB - it counts IMO

Sub-80 is sub-80 - still needs doing. So a big yes from me. It is your score - nobody else's. Use the knowledge you can do it when you next look like shooting close to or under 80.

I went round our course, 18 holes in a competitive round playing into tiny temp greens in 87 shots. How can it be classed as anything other than a sub 90. As others have said my drives were ending up in a similar place to when we play off the whites. I appreciate it is not medal but it is still a competitive round.

However I have not done it in a medal, I just have the confidence when April comes round to say to myself "you've done it before now do it again".

Just to add, regardless if we were given gimmes by our opponents I continued to hole out every time. For me a score doesn't count until it's underground.

So your drives were in similar places, but the temps were probably short of the normal green as 90% of them invariably are which means shorter second shots. Also wherever the temps are they will probably be away from the normal green side hazards, bunkers, ponds etc. Its a good round no doubt, but I wouldn't call it a PB, but each to their own.

not as good on my return visit, 39 pts 86 blows, driving was a little more erratic today and had a couple of lip outs, still reasonably happy with my game,

at the Belfry PGA this morning, so hoping for another decent knock
