Hey - sort of new to golf. Played alot as a junior but shoulder surgery pushed me away from it for 10 yrs but im back with a vengance now.

Picked up a set of Dunlop "John Daly" clubs at the start of the summer from my favourite discount sports store for £50 all in (lol) and started playing again. Ive now joined a decent club and got an initial handicap of 21.

I feel im hitting the ball well enough with the clubs i have althogh maybe lack a bit of distance vs boys with the high end clubs (esp with a driver)

So does it really matter what clubs you have?
Are better clubs likely to improve my game much?
are they more forgiving?
or at this stage is it much of a muchness and itll only make a difference to lower handicap players??

Cheers - J

Dunlop clubs may aswell be cricket bats, you cannot play them, they are trash, hence the fact i paid more for a second hand wedge than you did for an entire set

so lets say i need a new set.
There are some decent offers around at the moment, for example
Nike Victory Red Full Cavity - £260 (comments??)
TM R9 driver - £90 (comments??)

does anyone know if the offers get better in the winter??
are these clubs decent? suitable for mid handicap golfer??

Thanks for help?

Those clubs are fine if you do a bit of digging you will/might find better deals. What about second hand from somewhere like golfbidder or whatever they are called?

He manages to be playing them to a good enough standard to get a 21hc :D

They might not last well, they might not be as good for someone as high end clubs, but you can't say "cannot play with them" because he obviously can, and to a better standard than a lot of people who have been playing for longer.

My mate can play to around 10-12 over with them so they are not just trash. However the shafts are like black spaghetti :o

Have a word with the pro at you're club. He might have a suitable second hand set. Plus he'll probably let you take them out for a round to see how you like them.

Hmm, may speak to the pro then at the weekend. Tho my problem is that im easily swayed so could see my spending more than expected..

Had a look at that used club site. I'm a lefty so the choice was somewhat limited. The tm driver I mentioned seems like a bargain?? Used ones were selling for more.

Whatever you do and wherever you buy from, try before you buy. Ideally use the practice ground at your club or a driving range so you get to see the ball flight rather than relying on a net or bay and a piece of computer software.

there are a few solutions to improving your game. Most of them involve going to your local pro and getting some lessons!! Then doing what none of us do enough of and actually practice the lesson without playing a match.
Ask him to hit your club and be amazed....he will advise you on a set at the same time that will suit your game.
