Does it matter yellow or white tees?

I've only been playing for about 6 months now, and today I scored under 100 on my home course for the first time!! Initially I was super proud, but something was said by my playing partners that made me question it. We went out on the yellow tees today rather than the whites. Our course has 4 tees, Red(lady's), Yellow, white and blue(which are our ridiculously long championship tees). We have been playing whites as that is what our competitions are played on and we thought we would play the whites to make sure that we ready for them. In fact we had our second comp yesterday and I hit 111 off the whites. But today we went off the yellows as we went out with another new starter who was nervous about the distances off the whites. Like I said I had my best ever round and scored 99, but the other lads indicated that this probably doesn't really count as it wasn't off the whites...I'm a bit embarrassed to admit, but I don't know enough to be able to say it still counts? Their argument is that the course is 285 yds shorter on the yellows than the whites and it won't count until I can do this off the whites. To be fair they don't really know either(we all started together), but their reasoning seems to make sense! The par is still 72 regardless of which tee you go off so that seems to fit in. The closest I have got to under 100 on the white tees is 105 and I don't really know how to equate the rounds?

Thanks for any help/info anyone can provide for me! :)

You shot 99 that happened so of course it counts. It won't affect your handicap because it wasn't in competition but congratulations of beating 100 for the first time. The next step is to do it in competition 😃

It's still a measured course and you still have to play the shots, as such, IMO your mates are sprouting utter tosh, maybe they were just jealous.

We have 2 holes off our yellows that makes them considerably tougher than off our whites, because the index and par changes, enjoy your achievement, well done 👍

Firstly well done. It's a great milestone and I would count it as breaking 100. In general there isn't too much difference between yellows and whites, at my course it plays one shot harder. I would look at that and think that you have the capabilities to do that off the white tees as well.

The question rather depends on how far the white and yellow tees are apart. If they are within a few yards of each other, possibly not a lot. Does your course have a different SSS for yellow, white and blue tees. It is only your score against SSS or CSS that counts. Congratulations on breaking 100 for the first time by the way.

Thanks Guys,

It does have a different SSS. It is 73 off the whites but 71 off the yellows...I kind of vaguely understand how this works in terms of handicaps and adjusted scores and what not. To be honest it felt a lot easier off the yellow tees. Some my shots today meant that i had the potential to hit the green in two on the par 4s(which I actually managed twice today!) and I was normally in and around the green in two at least. When we are off the whites very often I know that I have to lay up. Our third hole par 4 for example is over a lake. My tee shot doesn't get me close enough to have a shot at the green over the lake, so I normally have to lay up to the right of the lake and then chip on. Today I hit the fringe of the green with my second shot over the lake! The shorter distance did make a big difference to the way I played each hole! Hence me thinking my friends may be right! :)

And yeah, I have to put it together in a competition next!!! :)

As already said, it's a measured course of the yellows, so of course it counts. What always interests me more is the psychology involved in playing off different tees. You state that the course is only 280 yards shorter of the yellows. As a rough guess the course length playing of the whites is maybe 4/5% longer. In real terms it is nothing over 18 holes, however in our heads the challenge may seem much more.

Play each shot as an individual shot and forget about what tees you are playing of. You can shoot the same score of either yellow or white if your strong mentally

Well done on achieving one of golfs milestones. No, it does not matter which tee you play off, you still did it. I cannot speak for the others, but I am always happy to play to my handicap no matter which colour tee I play from.

You broke 100 for the first time, end of story. What tees or even what course doesn't matter, you have achieved the first milestone for golfers, well done.

As others have said already, no, it doesn't matter as it's a measured course off either.

So very well done and now get that next milestone in your sights.

Well played

You still had to make the score and so well done. It's a great achievement and should be pleased. Don't get hung up on which tees you did it from or let your partners comments take the gloss of it. Use the knowledge you can do it, and you probably made some mistakes, and take it out when you play off the whites and in competitions

yup to that in a nutshell, and well done.

Also at our course for the most of the winter a lot of the yellow and white tees have been side by side til our first midweek comp this Thursday. So I would not go by the yardage distance between the yellows and whites as stipulated by the card. The numbers mentioned will be miles out. Bottom line is a sub 100 is a sub 100.

for one day and one day only

YOU ARE THE MAN.

Well til the next time at least:whoo:

I definitely made some mistakes! My putting was terrible all day! I had the chance at par a couple of times and choked! My par 3s could also have done with some work today! But today at least I could feel myself improving compared to other games! I only recorded a single 8(first hole par 4! went terrible!! hit it into the ditch!!), and even on the par 5s I managed two 6's and two 7's. Guess it was just my day today! Thanks everyone for the reassurance!

Great scoring, don't listen to them. Smacks of the usual golfer banter.

If you let it get to you your scores will only go back up, more swindle money for them!

you say that your mates are new to the game as well as you ,and they werent sure weather or not it counts either, well it does count ,and it counts even more if you beat your mates ,and that could be the reason they are saying it didnt count.
i say well done ,now break it again and then 95 .the rest will follow as you know you can do it.

I still finished last, they are a bit better than me, We played Stableford but counted all our shots, and putted out them all. One of them had a blinder and scored 90. He plays off 22, the other lad plays off 27 and he hit 102 but beat me on sf score by a point! So i still only came 3rd despite playing the best I have so far! :) It'll come! :) It's actually quite good because the three of us are pushing each other to be better all the time! I doubt I would have improved so much as quickly without the competition between us!
