After 20 years of using Windows, I'm toying with moving to the dark side.
But, I don't want to spend too much in case I don't like it (tempted with the Imac 27'')
My question is, is it worth getting a mac mini instead and using my own peripherals ?
I wouldn't be needing a high spec machine, just surfing the web and watching Youtube
I'd appreciate any advice about these mysterious machines please
Thanks in advance

I bought a MacBook on the back of being very impressed by the iPad Pro. My laptop at that time was a HP i5 with 8GB ram and 1 tb SSD. Very, very underwhelmed by the MacBook. Build quality isn't as good as the HP, and the HP to that spec was more than adequate - I got sucked in by the Apple marketing and my expectation that the MacBook would be on a par with the iPad Pro. The MacBook is slow by comparison and not at all as intuitive as the iPad or the HP.

I've watched a million Youtube vids on how to get the best out of the MacBook, and tried oodles of the shortcuts etc, without losing the feeling that I've been sold a pup.

If/when the iPad dies I will replace it in a heartbeat. When the MacBook dies I will have a party and return to a decent spec'd Windows driven laptop.

I work at a Web Dev firm and the majority of the company have Mac Mini's on our desks (including a number of the devs). Been really impressed with mine, runs great, will definitely be more than powerful enough to do what you want it to.

Chrome book for me all the way, recently swapped to it and it is brilliant. We had Macbook and the build was terrible and always had issues with it.

Thanks for the replies

Bob me man, don't know the price of the Mac mini you are after, don't know owt about the spec etc etc. But back in 2015 when I was being made redundant, I told Missis T am gonna treat meself to a Mac book. I did, it still is a fast thing of beauty. Anyway I was talking to a computer geek at work re this. He told me to go on the Apple website and to look for " refurbed and clearance". It is at the bottom of the opening page. He Said you can buy some as new macs with significant savings. In essence they are returns, damaged boxes etc etc. Still with warranties. Have a look on there me man. May get more for your money.👍

The last year of windows 10 updates have been a hair short of a debacle.

My father in law had a decent setup and a series of botched screwed up is hard drives and caused a heap of other issues.

Personally I only experience one issue, which was one drive messing up my relocated download, video and photo folders when it was forced upon us.

Other than that I’ve personally loved windows 10. Sadly I’ve heard many stories like my FiL and I’ve suggested he moves to Apple.

Sadly that means him buying all his specialist software all over again or swapping to Apple equivalents and relearning all his workflows. Not to mention all the data transfer effort and learning a whole new OS!

I think Apple make great desktops for families, pro-sumers and professionals alike. Their only main weak point is for gaming, possible also lack of software options when you have a preferred Windows program...

If that's all you want to do your going to pay to much if your going down the Apple route.

That's what I thought, I just wanted an affordable way of scratching the 'Apple Itch'

I think I'll stick with windows.
Thanks for all the replies

A early 201X macbook or macbook air can be purchased at a decent price second hand. Buy a brand new 500GB SSD and either clone or reinstall OS on SSD.

Its a cheaper option to scratch an apple itch and get a decent Mac to boot! Just make sure you replace HDD with SSD or bad times will come.
