Just as a starter.

Has anyone bought something that never/barely worked?

I have a netbook which has taken me two years (!!) to get working properly, and it took some drastic action (like installing a new operating system) to get it to do what it said on the tin.

Last year I bought one of these

did it work? Hell no. Trouble is we didn't find it until June!

I bought a £300 Sony device once that never worked...I took it back and got a refund.

There's a lot of dodgy stuff out there....if you should end up with something, what's the legal position?

Well, I guess if it works it works, otherwise I suspect you could be testing my question about the legal position.
Bad luck.

My wife has a friend who only buys Next. Next clothing, Next TV's (why would you?), in fact if it has Next on it, she'll buy it. And god. Some of the crap she buys. Even their clothes aren't that well made.

It doesn't help that I don't like her as well. (Though the feeling is mutual!)

That reminds me. I once had a chap working with me who also lived and breathed Next. Thought he was the dogs do-da's. Just turned out to be a snied little git!

Nope. I'll not be buying anything 'Next'!

As far as 'dodgy products' go. My golf clubs don't work. :D

A friend of mine, who was having hard times, bought a pair of watches for her daughters from a catalogue for Christmas. They were fairly cheap but nice looking. When they arrived they weren't working so she thought that the batteries must be flat and that was why they were being sold off cheap.
She took the watches to the local watchmaker to have new batteries installed and the guy took one look at them and asked her "Have you tried winding them up?" :D

True story though!

lower tech stuff aplenty.

the airbed inflator powered from the cigarette lighter socket, we were going camping and had one double and three single airbeds. utterly useless - pumped a whole thimblefull of air each stroke. I blew up the double and 2 singles and it still hadn't half done one.

jetwash spray - Halfords - bought in the sale, sat in the cupboard then when I came to use it got water from evertwhere except the nozzle.

What did you do with it in the end?

Oh, I just remembered.

The software that come with certain Samsung mobiles doesn't work.

I just use the memory card to take stuff on and off mine, but a work colleague took the phone back and demanded a refund/swap phone.

I must find out what happened.

I suspect crap software that devalues the use of a device is a very grey area.

I'd lost the receipt by then, they wouldn't accept it without - old stock hence the sale - so I binned it
