Do you use a 5 wood?

I was in AG the other day and saw a nice wee deal on a used Taylormade SLDR S 5 wood. No marks on it and it was £70 stiff shaft. I asked to try it out and I felt I was hitting better than the Titleist 913 FD 5 wood they had on the rack. According to GC2 I was hitting this thing over 200 yards with a draw which is the shot I go for mostly. I scratched my head for a few mins then tried again. 223, 219, 209 thereafter ( It was getting hot in there)

I was thinking, this is what I hit my 3 wood on a good hit. I average 174 on Game golf with my 3 wood with the longest being 247. I started thinking about trading my Ping G15 3 wood for it. I've come away three days later and I'm still wondering about it, or just adding the 5 wood and using both to get a better feel out on the course.

Questions...

How accurate is GC2 in this situation?
Does anyone prefer a 5 wood?
What could be the reason for the differencies?
Is the G15 built for the better player with the smaller face?

I've never been able to draw the G15. It's a mental note in myself that I think I'm going to drag the heal on the ground before I get to the ball. It's got quite sharp edge. Off the tee going straight it's fine.

I'm aware of buying gear for the sake of it being there, but this looks pretty good. Any pros or cons to it you can see before I head over tonight?

Thanks as always.

I love my 5 wood! I go Mini Driver (12 deg) to 18 degree 5 wood, then 22 degree hybrid.

The 5 wood is arguably my best club in the bag, the go to club. Absolute weapon, so easy to hit and goes for miles! Much much easier and more consistent (while not much shorter) than a 3 wood!

Interesting. I did feel a great difference between hitting the Titleist and the SLDR in store right enough. The Titleist was set to D4 right enough. Just felt dead.

Love my 5 wood, it's an ex demo SLDR S which I picked up for £15 because it has a dent in the top.
Sounds weird when I hit it but goes like a bomb, I was only maybe 20 yards behind my PP last week when he took driver off the tee.

So it's not in my head that it went far on GC2? New tech vs old in the G15 maybe? Just seemed to hang in the air for ages on the screen.

More often then not amateur players will hit a 5 or even 7 wood better / further then a 3 wood.
That bit of extra loft does wonders, I dont use a 5/7 wood anymore because Ive finally found a 3 wood I actually like and can use.

judging by your Game golf stats you are hitting this 5 wood further than your driver on the course.. Plus its a AG sim..

not a chance;)

I used to use a 5 wood but ditched it only to fit an extra club in at the other end of the bag. If we were allowed 15 I'd still have it.

Rory and Tiger both use one as well (not that that should sway your decision, but you never know when you'll need to carry 250yds and hit it miles in the air;))

Not really. Furthest I've hit the 3 wood is 247, and the furthest I've hit the driver was 280. It's only the Titleist 913 D3 I use. The other two are no longer with us lol

once in a blue moon hits don't count for much, your stats say 220 for driver and 175 for 3 wood, i once hit a drove 420 yards it was down wind on a concrete hard fairway and has no relevance to how far i usually hit a driver.

Sim in AG are always tricked up to make you buy things.

That's the sort of thing I was looking for. If that's the general view then I'd defo count it into the buying process. Only reason my GG stat is so low is because I duffed an 84 yarder off the 3rd one night thinking I'd Tiger it lol. Pure shocker. I think I laughed for that whole hole. My mate was calling me Happy Gilmour for the rest of the round.

I'm going to give it a try again after work. I've been to the gym this morning so I should now be able to hit it a mile.

hit one of your own clubs to get an idea of the settings of the machine.

I've a 5 Wood in my holiday set out in Italy and love it. But for some reason don't carry one in my usual set up, although the way the 3H is going at the moment I could certainly use it! Very nice club to hit off the tee.

As for the stats, I wouldn't read much into the distances.

A - they're trying to sell you a club.
B - You're under no pressure whatsoever, which is likely to lead to either a beautiful tempo swing with a great shot or an absolute ripper of a swing where you just want to see how far you can hit it. Completely different to the course when you have to manage your shots.

But hey - who doesn't like new clubs! I wouldn't go for the trade in option though as you may regret it. If the 3W does become redundant then put it in the FS section here.

Some, maybe, but I wouldn't say all.

I'm getting the same yardages on course that I did on the monitor in AG Leicester, and as someone else mentioned, always take your own club to verify the accuracy of the monitor (if you know how far you hit it!).

I'm heading up to the range tonight so I'll see if they have any decent 5 woods. At least I can compare the two clubs and if they have an SLDR S even better. They are usually cheaper than AG for their used stuff.

i have a ping i20 which is end of life now, so could be a bargain. i want to change it to keep my OCD happy, but i can't its that good!!

Sims in American golf are no good . Completley designed for this reason !

Bit of a sweeping generalisation.

GC2 (which the OP mentioned) is one of the top 3 launch monitors available and is definitely not 'designed' to sell people golf clubs under false pretences.

They can be altered to replicate different weather conditions and (presumably) altitudes, but if that happens it is down to the staff, not the monitor.

What do you base your statement on?

My mate is ex pro . Hits his 6 iron 186 on the number . Took a job in American golf part time and could knock his 6 iron over 210 comfortably .
