There seems to be a craze with people saying 'i will hit driver' or 'ive got 4 iron' . Do you say this or 'I've got a 4 iron'.

I don't say anything about which club I'm going to use, nor do any of my playing companions. Am I the exception?

I don't normally say anything :D

I don't see the need to announce what I'll be using as, frankly, it's not overly useful to my PP's as we'll hit clubs different distances.

I pull whichever club and try and smash the skin off the ball :D

Edit: No Rosie, you're not the only one

Who cares really - and this from a bit of a 'correct English' pedant.

And how many Drivers, 6-irons etc do you have in your bag? Surely it's 'the Driver', not 'a Driver'!

Like rosecott & Gareth I keep schtum.

After all who is interested? I know I could not care less what my playing partner(s) may be hitting so I don't imagine they are keen to know what I am using to ruin another scorecard.

It would seem rather self-important to me to be making these sort of announcements.

I just meant in general when you are referring to clubs in any situation. Sky sports seem to say it all the time. What's next, will they start saying Welcome to Open Championship, or something?

Agree if I was standing on the tee making some grand pronouncement about the club I was about to use (could be deemed to be giving advice :)) - but in general chat between shots it would be commonplace I think to talk about what you are using of the tee these days. I can't hear myself saying such as 'I tend to use driver off 12' - just not me.

My normal PP and myself are roughly the same length with our drivers....Unless I hit it dead centre then I have around 20 yards on him.
Where I will hit a 7i from 150 he is an 8 iron so we ask each other to gauge what club we will use. So if I ask what he taking over a shot and he say 7i I will go with my 6.

If it a hole where driver is required, then occasionally, I may comment, which would be "I've paid for it, so I'm going to use it". Sometimes if I'm being mischievious and a playing partner asks what club I've played I'll kick it up a couple of clubs. For example it's my honor (it does happen occasionally) and I play an 7 or 8 on a par 3, when asked I'll say I used my 5 or 6. Then watch as the cogs of doubt turn in their heads at their club selection.

Not in a comp I hope?

and yet again we fall into the area of advice. I would not see it as offering advice to a FC saying such as 'I'm going to use a long iron on 12 and keep my driver in my bag - just too risky for me to use my driver at the moment'

I would agree that isn't advice. Asking someone what club they hit to gauge from it what club they would hit themselves is though.
