My first was a works match play comp played during working hours . I was the only one that had to take an official holiday [ as I found out years later].
I was a complete novice [ max h/c allowed 18 in those days ] playing one of the blue-eyed boys from the admin office at his 9 hole private course, which I'd never played.
Standing on the first tee , I looked around to see about a dozen or so suits watching , our 2 directors, various managers and assistants etc .

I was shaking like a leaf as I had only had a few games with friends before that, so it was very intimidating for me . After 9 holes I was 5 down then the big guns lost interest and left. I relaxed a bit and came back a little but still lost on the 17th 2up.

So what's your story. :swing:

Preliminary round of the rabbit match play this year, my first ever exposure to this format. BRICKING IT. Anyway, was 5 down after 10, but finished 1UP after 18! I'm now through to the semi final after winning my last 3 matches... Love match play!

Primary school cup in 1958.
I won it 30 years after my father and my nephew won it 30 years after me.
Some impressive names on that cup, at least 5 Scottish internationals and many Pros.
Its medal play nowadays.

Club Matchplay Singles KO in '94
I was off 12 and the other Guy was off 8
I was 4 up after 4 and lost 3&2
Still hate Matchplay.....

I can't remember that far back... it was over 30 yrs ago...guess I'm getting very old.

I can remember my longest match - 46 holes!! 1983.

All square after 18, sudden death for another 4 but the failing light won. Returned the following night but thunder and lightning won after 6 holes. The following night, after another titanic struggle, I was on the par 4 18th in two but a long way from the hole... bagged it for a 1up win.

5 years ago lost 6 and 5 first year as a new member but won the singles the next year and got my name on the board.

This year was my first matchplay comp - playing a 28 h/c off 14 so knew I would be giving away alot of shots.

I 5up through 5 and gave him a 3 foot putt for par, when I had a similar 3-4 foot putt for birdie. Immediately regretted it, then I Missed my putt and he had the hole and momentum swing. Fought him off all the way to the 16th tee when I was still 3up with 3 to play.

Proceeded to gift him each hole 1 by one and lost in the first playoff hole.

Lesson learned for sure and look forward to having another go next year.

I played a nervy high handicapper in a semi final once giving hunners of shots. I played well and won on the 11th green
We played in, and over a beer he asked why I was still concentrating so hard during the match even when I was winning so comfortably.
I told him that if he had holed his 4 foot putt on the 11th green, and the 'playing in' scores had counted, I would have won by one up.

Yep - I played Gaelic football for 20 years and knew that when you had the better of someone you should never let up.

Credit to him though - he stuck at it and never gave in so although it hurt like hell to shake hands to a defeat, his win will live long in the memory so if I ever find myself 5 down after 5 I will know it aint over.

Can't remember the first one, but last year 2 stick in my mind.

First one had to give 22 shots. I was 5 up after 5 and he hadn't got a ball in the air yet, and I went soft and eased up. Ended up winning on the first extra hole.

The other was against someone who didn't have much belief and thought he had no chance. Went soft, lost.

Lesson learnt? Maybe.

My first Matchplay was about 15 years ago, I was playing the club Captain at Woodbury Park. I can remember being 5 down after 6 holes, and then winning on the 19th in between the 6th and 19th a blur.

My first was on monday, pairs, in a national tournament. My partner and I only started playing last summer. I'm still off 28 and him 26. Our opponents were off 14 and 16. It started well, I parred the first with a shot and beat there pars to put us one up. I parred the second which I thought would be good enough for a half, but one of them made a tricky 20 footer for birdie. Went two up on 8 and 9. I missed 4 and 5 footers on 10 and 11. Nerves were really getting to me now. Thankfully my partner stepped up and we won 2&1. Looking forward to the next round.
