Was having a chat about 'release' with a pal and just wondering what you all thought about the idea of 'releasing' the club, either consciously does this happen 'naturally' for you?

Or do you try not to release the club?

I try not to, just to try to return to address position and on plane. If you have to roll your hands or flick (if that is what release is) then something is not quite there in your swing. I know as I use my hands to save my swing when I get off plane, I don't do this consciously, it is just a natural reaction.

I can't vote in the poll as I don't know what release is, for all I know my "A" swing does not have it!

I like to release the club. Usually after a duffed chip. I find the overarm technique gets the most distance. :)

I think most would consider the 'Release' to be the act of losing the lag in the shaft into impact. In this respect its vital.

Stand there swing it and hope club face meets ball somewhere near the middle and the ball goes forward and airborne into a position I can find it and repeat the process. With my unique swing being close to creating a sonic boom with its speed I doubt there is time to create lag let alone releasing it

You can gain an extra few yards if you really try to fire through your release.

Any and all swings have release in them, the lower hand has to release its the only way to physically swing a club.

If this is so then its not with your hands but with your body.

Is release more about your upper body and shoulders than the club?

Flicking the hands through is one sure way to ruin a good swing.

I've definitely got some drive from half way down through to just after impact, and then let the club-head carry on through. I've called that deliberate, but it could also be described as 'just happening' as well.

@Virt Seems another slightly pointless poll to me.m How are you going to use the results? What do you think you do? And does it really matter?

@ScienceBoy. There is no way you should be simply returning to 'address position'. Impact position is vastly different! Are these the same? http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgu...DMCu-h7Aau_oEo&sqi=2&ved=0CD0Q9QEwAw&dur=2444

From what I am being taught and Bob is going to tell me otherwise, but none the less:-

  1. On take away club goes back to waist height.
  2. At waist height, you hinge your wrists and continue your back swing.
  3. Down swing starts and you drop the club, the feeling is the club head is behind you and your right elbow tucks in at the wasit.
  4. You then start your hip turn with your left hip (for right handed golfers) starting to pull back and your left leg starting to straighten, back of left shoulder still pointing at target.
  5. With club now lagging behind, the butt is pointing at 1 o'clock of target.
  6. Arms swing through and wrists unhinge at the ball, impact.
  7. Left leg straight, heel planted, left arm straight, club face square.
  8. On follow through club head feels as if it is going out to 1 o'clock.

The unhinging of the wrists is my understanding of release, the longer the club the earlier you have to do it.

Although all the points above are listed, it all happens so fast the result feels simultaneous, it's getting all points in order and getting the synchronicity correct. Points 5, 6 and 7 happen almost together.

Sorry it seems pointless to you. I trust you didn't burden yourself by voting.

What do I do? Are you really interested?

And does it really matter? Enough for you to ask me 3 questions about my opinion on 'release'.

All I'm trying to do is create discussion on the technical aspects of the swing. I enjoy discussing the swing, even the nitty-gritty bits, but sorry if this seems pointless.

I'll be back soon to start a thread on:

"How far do you hit your driver?"
"Slow play bugs me"
"OOOOH new shineeeeys"
"What socks should I buy?"
