......You saw more of him at the weekend??

The guys in these positions predominantly work Monday to Friday,9 to 5 so a huge portion of club members never clap eyes or know who this person is.

Would it make a difference to you if he/she worked/mingled with members at weekend even if it was just once a fortnight for a couple of hours?

Not sure it would have to be the weekend but at some point would be good (i.e. one evening a month perhaps).

People like to know (or think they know) what's going on so communication from the management is always a good thing.

Just my opinion though......

As a retired manager can I comment that the business week is generally Mon-Fri and if I wanted to contact the bank, suppliers, arrange meetings, demos etc it would generally be Mon-Fri.
I worked on average 400 unpaid hours a year for 25 years mainly attending club functions, matches and meetings at weekends and evenings.
I wonder if those critics worked the same unpaid hours as i did?

Who's criticising?

Ours is a total waste of space, the most ignorant man i'v ever met,he is a full time employee if you can call it that never there till 5,never comes up with any ideas to make the club any better.

He seems to worm his way around the committee everytime, never interacts with the members even to ask how you've played hows are you finding the course conditions ,i could go on, he's a member at St Andrews and he isn't like there either.

I have to say ours seems very good, he is there on weekends, plays sat comps, always speaks, will stop and chat or discuss changes etc. Since his arrival the course has taken on some fantastic changes, better drainage, New tee boxes and bunkers. Very good imo.

I know him, we've played together. He paid for four of us to play Fulford this week as a thank you for helping with the club refurb.

Also know the owner, very nice down to earth bloke who isn't afraid to get his hands dirty, Not many multi millionaires would do that.

Both are approachable to all members, play in a couple of comps a week, drink in the bar and attend functions

Our sec is a top bloke plays off +3 and is always at the club, you can nip in for a coffee and have an informal chat about something your not happy about and always has time for everybody plus he can lay the law down with the best of them.

I hear the guy at The Hirsel is a top banana, heard a rumor that's he's going to send me a 4 ball voucher.

Champion guy.

My clubs not even got a manager/secretary which I think is an absolute farce! Means the pro gets a whole lot of SH!t to deal with like taking calls from energy companys etc...rather than doing what they do best which is welcoming, teaching & selling.

Back to the question Not that important if the manager has their house in order, good Pro & bar manager. Essential to be around on major days/weekends though.

Our club manager, Jackie, is a lovely lady, very very helpful, although she does seem to shudder at the mention of my name.:mmm: She was great helping sort out the forum meet, and the H4H one, as well as finding someone to play with Swinger when no one else could at the Society challenge. Personally quite happy with her just working weekdays.

My club is owned entirely by one man so there is no Secretary as such. The owner makes all the decisions as to how the club is run, how the course is maintained, how the pro shop is stocked, etc, etc. And he does not like to be argued with...there are two ways to do things, his way or the wrong way. The members get along with him well enough but you just have to accept how things are. So if you have an pleasant, approachable, interested secretary and you have some input in to how your club & course is run, lucky you!
I've often wondered how most clubs are set up business-wise, are they limited companies, trusts, what?

Interesting question Dodger. Not convinced it would make much of a difference if they were around for a time at weekends. I know I've certainly gotten on well with recent Secretary's we've had. I've always made the point of going in to see them during the week when I needed to. Used to hire part of our lounge for business meetings a few years back and dealt with our then Sec quite regularly. That was certainly a good way of adding to clubs coffers by the way !

What's also interesting is the thoughts on this thread that the Secretary or Manager is the one at the helm, thought that the committee decided on strategy and the Sec or Manager implemented said strategy ;) If a Sec or Manager can make all sorts f decisions off their own back then that's a recipe for disaster IMO.

The "Secretary is one at the helm" is for me just blind misunderstanding of how clubs work but hey ho it's a common misunderstanding.

The reason I ask is that we as a group, during SGU management courses, have been told by 'industry experts' that we should be looking to do this bit of weekend working/networking.......good practice IMO and one I wouldn't mind, would free me up for midweek golf!;)

We don't have a pro-shop, just a teaching pro.

Our secretary is a grade A diamond of a fella.

He is around at weekends also, as he plays, and is very approachable.
