Do you carry clubs you don't use?

For years I carried a three iron, which was very erratic and unpredictable, but I carried it anyway, and used it for chipping out from under trees when I absolutely did not want to get the ball airborne. (before this I had a bladed 1 iron for similar reasons).

I have finally put it in the wardrobe, and now use the four iron for the above situations. Sometimes I can even hit this properly (but not in medal play), so it stays in the bag.

Any one else have a club in the bag which gets used once in a blue moon?

No as I carry my bag and anything not needed is a burden. I take out 4-pw, driver, 3 & 5 wood, wedges 52 60 & putter and thats it. I do review my bag before i set off, I sometime leave the 4 iron at home depending on the weather and sometime bring a 56 instead of the 60.

I carry too, but still always have 14 clubs and an umbrella. I was thinking about this in terms of if the R and A reduce us to 12 clubs (has been discussed), would we actually notice. Since I don't use my 58° much, or my 4 iron, I am not sure it would really be a problem, although obviously I would scream blue murder.

On the other hand, if they increase the number of clubs for amateurs (has also been discussed, whilst reducing the number for pros), my 19° rescue, my beloved 3 iron, my 60°, my 56° and both my Scottys can go in the bag. Then I might need a trolley.

I bought a five wood when I was struggling with my long irons, but then subsequently replaced my three and four irons with the equivalent rescue clubs. I hardly ever use the five wood these days and seem to carry it on the basis that if you're allowed fourteen clubs you might as well have that many in the bag!

HHmmm, currently playing with 3 wood, 3 hybrid, 5,7,9, PW and SW and putter....that's 8 clubs....need 'em all (obviously!!)

Binned the 3 and 4 iron once the hybrid/rescue arrived, can hit it full and choked (easy swing).

Not using my driver just now, but it'll be back in the bag soon.

It's possible I could play permanently with 1/2 set of irons, but it's just an experiment and allows me to carry and get round faster.

I carry, D 4-sw 60deg wedge and putter. All are used. I love my 4 iron just off the green. My 5 iron is prob my least used club but they all get a look in!

Do carry 14 clubs may only use 3 iron/4 iron once in the round---have considered leaving the 3 iron out of the bag every so often then change my mind and left it in.

I always carry 14 clubs. Driver and 3 wood are permanet fixtures and used for most of the tee shots except par 3's

I then chop and change between my 5 wood and a 3 iron depending on wind strength and how wet the ground is. If it is windy I use the 3 iron for a better flight and if its isn't windy or the ground is wet it is the 5 wood for higher carry.

I then have a three hybrid (for tee shots on the longer par 3's - higher carry and better stop) and then its 4-PW 56 degree SW and a LW and putter

I can honestly say every club will get used every round. I understand the argument for carrying less and sometimes take a 1/2 set out on a summer evening and manufacture shots but I am an advocate of ensuring I have enough clubs to give me maximum choice over the type of shot I want to play.

after getting a 19deg hybrid i never use my 5 wood, this is just because my hybrid does everything my 5wd does but is more confidence inspiring.

suppose its better to have and not need than to need and not have.

I will be getting a new set, might be cobra fp after some of the advice on here.
The fp's come in a 5-sw then i have my current hybrids so i might end up with less than 14 or fill up the bag with wedgies.

Would carrying less clubs simplify things. Less decisions to make, so quicker play and also less doubt in your mind over club selection? May be you would get a better strike with less self doubt?

I never doubt about which club i should use or i should say i never doubt i have the wrong club!

i am pretty bad with my distances, it is something i need to work on, but never the less i pick a club and then give that shot all my focus.
Once i have made up my mind that's it, don't see the point in worrying about what might happen.
I am not playing for the open, all i want out of my game is to hit some good shots.

if i go over a green or short of it i don't get upset as i know this is where i need improvement so i just try to get a feel for the distance and club i should have hit.

The only problem with that is that you would likely end up hitting a lot more half shots when the distance you want to hit is right between clubs.
