OK, this is a take from the thread, not renewing and why.....

I had my Renewel letter through this morning, they have offered me a £250 discount due to not playing for 6 months as of Broken Ribs, I did play, April, May, June, July, August & March09, so most of the winter golf missed, so a good discount, as they could have said NO!! But did not :)

My problem is Money, 14 month old boy, partner not working, Pay rises and bonus's on stop beginning of this year and so on. :( I can hear the Violins :D

I can afford to join, but its a choice of a Membership at a great Club, no worries of Tee times, always can play comps, friendly place and course is always in great condition, closes only when it snows. Or, do I not renew and be able to afford to meet up once a month for a Society or Forum meet.

I think the answer is in the text, play once a month or play as many times as you can a months, a no brainer, well, let em know what you think :)

610 - 250 ??

Either way, join join join......

I just couldnt imagine not being able to turn out on a summers night for 9holes and a beer...... not to mention the Medals and simply playing when you want, as much as you want.

I'd hazard a guess that all your Forum meets, Society days etc etc will cost you a helluva lot more over the year.

the simple answer is join. reasons, play when you like, as often as you like, and in as many comps, swindles etc. playing society golf = infrequent golf, could get expensive, and i know club membership is getting expensive, but if more and more people stop membership, yes times are hard and we all realise that, and some tough decicisions lay ahead for all of us, then clubs will keep putting fees up and in the long term, may even cease to exist. its a catch 22, and i do not know the answers, but club membership makes sense for anyone playing weekly golf or more. hope you join and enjoy

I was thinking about this today you know and was going to start a new post called

'' Feeling the pinch, join a club''

But I will just add my bit here as it seems the right place.

Since I stumped up the cash for my club membership, I have alot more money floating about. The reasons being,

A) I dont spend £60-80 a week on green fee's alone
B) I tend not to go and spend money on Silly stuff filling my spare time with some retail therapy.
C) Instead of spending £10 a week at the range I just turn up and play or use the facilities.
D) I use less than half the amount of fuel I would do driving around to the different clubs to play 2-3x week. Sometimes 60-80 mile round trips.
E) I find now I dont need to spend as much time doing other activities that cost alot of money for the time I spend doing them. Being able to turn up when I want takes care of that.

If i ever feel like a change, I can always treat my self to a round on some other courses, or go along to forum meets or even play at one of the other members clubs from here.

£650 is not alot when you do the math.

If you played once a week at £20 a green fee, its only 30 rounds a year. Will you play more than this and if so, will you get more than your monies worth.

I know I do. My gaff is £25 per round so I only have to play about 22 rounds to recoup my money. I think I played that in the first 2 months. Not to mention the odd 6,9 or 12 holes I squeeze in from time to time. Or the hours on the practice areas etc.

Have a little think about it, I think I know what you will do anyway, this just makes the decision a little easier to digest. :D

Really?....or perhaps golf clubs will have to wake up and smell the coffee and enter the real business world and come up with some ideas that might make different types/forms of membership more appealing to more people....

yes i agree, but that can be very hard with members clubs, lots of comittees to go through etc, but you are right, a new type of thinking is required

I am sure the number of committee meeting needed by reduced and speed of the decision making process will get speeded up when they realise they can't pay the bills!!

Unfortunately, the time wrap that most golf clubs are in, whilst being 'nice', will be their ultimate downfall....

OK Guys, as mentioned, you have made it easier. I will be saving money as said, 2 miles door to door, could walk there, but wont :)

I might be squeezing a game in tomorrow, so have already checked out the comps for April, so will book myself in for them all ;)

Also let the guys know the news, where do I sign

Cheers all.

Good choice, if I could afford to join my local course and spend enough time there to warnt the cash I would, but this year is going to be tight I feel.
