Do I need two rescue clubs?

Currently I have a 15 degree fairway wood and a 18 degree rescue which I am looking to change. I usually take 4-SW in irons, with my 4 iron being 23.7 degrees.

My question is: Do I need two rescue clubs for between my 3 wood and 4 iron? Or does something like a 19/20 degree rescue fill the gap ok?

I'm a beginner, shooting high atm and I'm not sure whether I'll get much of an advantage from taking two.

If you are a beginner sneds I would advise you get yourself into the game and work on improving your existing game before buying. What you already have in my view is more than enough to keep you going, buying new stuff does not always improve beginners by very much. When your game improves you will know what you need to fill gaps.

Its all too easy to get into the buying game and if you are wealthy or have donors then I cant really say you shouldnt, but at least 50% of golf kit bought by beginners has little or no benefit whatsoever. Otherwise people would just buy their way to scratch! Most golf kit bought has a short life span with most golfers, some dont have stuff long enough to get used to it before the next encouraging deal is pushed their way by others or even pros.

To be blunt, you should be knocking on a consistant 18 or below h/c before you spend more and then it should be with caution and under the guidance of a good pro who isnt just after your money, but is also interested in making good golfers.

When your game improves so will your choices.

I dont know what you play off sneds but as a beginner I say stick with what you have for a while. ;)

The only reason I am buying a new rescue is because my current one is offset - which was fantastic previously as it was the only club I hit straight. But now I'm getting a tiny bit more consistent and all I do with the club is hook it!

So a new rescue is needed, was just wondering if one club was enough to bridge the gap!

i.i.u.c. you are thinking of binning your 18 degree rescue and not replacing it?

I'd say......not a good idea......

I have 1/3/5 and a 21*rescue plus 4-SW. The thought of having nothing between 3 wood and 4 iron is not something I'd consider. Those of you that know my game know I'm often seen taking a driver, then a 5 iron (to avoid cock-ups on the lay-ups) then a wedge into greens.....BUT, if I can make the distance I go for the correct club, be it a 5 wood or a 3 rescue. A 3 wood can be a fickle beast for "medium" players, so I'd always want a club in between 3w and 4i.

I wouldn't personaly waste my time with 2 rescues, I can hit my 21* hybrid 9 (3 iron replacement) the distance of a 4 iron if the lie is too bad for the iron.

t.b.h. I used to live on the regular use of driver, 5 wood to most holes over 400 or par 5s. I only go with irons when the green is definately out of reach. Then again, on a long holes, if the rescue should leave me bang on 80 or 95 or 110, that'll be my choice.

It's all about your preferred method of course management.

I have a gap between my 15* 3 wood & 20* Hybrid only because I carry a 60* wedge and something has to go, but mainly because my course is short but if I played a longer course I would take the 5 wood 18* and drop the 60*.

Have a look at my what’s in my sexy bag: -

I have my 20* to replace my 3-4 irons. Dont strike my long irons consistently enough to justify carrying them.

I have 2 in my bag a TM #3 @19degree and a TM #4 @22 degree. The #3 I was hitting not to much shorter than my 5 wood (within 10-15 yards) so I dumped the 5 wood and got myself a #4 rescue this replaces my 3-4 irons as i've always had trouble with long irons. For the gap in between my 3 wood and #3 rescue, I just choke down on my 3 wood.

I was even thinking of getting the #5 rescue @25degree, but i'm not sure i'm old enough yet to have 3 rescue's in my bag ;)
