Currently have the Callaway BB V series 3 and 5 wood and both do ok however had a hit of the XR16 5 wood today and was impressed with flight and distance it matched my 3 wood

So do I really need the V fairways shoud I just swap for the 5 XR and use it as a 3 wood ish and go down the grip when required for less distance ?

Has anybody else just got a 5 wood in the bag And not a 3?

I know there is other options like play a 4 wood instead of 3 and 5 but this XR was very impressive am going to take it out for 18 tomorrow and 36 Monday ( removing my 3+5) to see how I get on
Any comments appreciated

It's important to remember that every club below the driver is a 'gapping' club and you should have them balanced throughout your bag. Be careful you don't end up with some big gaps in your bag!

I go from Driver to 5 wood. It's excellent off the tee and much easier for me to hit off the deck than a 3 wood.

A lot of people get better distance out of a 5 wood than a 3 wood, but it depends on where you use it, if it was off the tee I'd keep the 3 wood, off the deck then by all means ditch the 3 wood. BTW those BB's are a doddle to hit and long.

I carry a driver, 3 and 5 wood as they give me the options I need for my course. Several holes are better served with three wood off the tee and I need the 5 wood to reach two of the par fives off the whites. It's a personal choice though and depends on what your course demands

I ditched a 3 wood a few years ago as it was unreliable off the deck and so only got used a couple times a round off the tee, depending on the course.

Have a 2016 M2 5 wood now which is probably longer than my old 3 wood and far easier off the deck on par 5's and longer par 4's (especially after a poor drive!).

i couldn't do without my 3 wood. i hit it pretty well of deck and tee.

used it 5 times on the first 7 holes today 1 off the tee and the others as 2nd shots, but then it was into a 30 plus MPH wind.

Dropped my 3 wood when i was off 18 as it was causing me to lose too many shots.

I would duff off the tee with driver and try to rescue the situation with the 3 wood only to carve it into the crap. I just removed this option from my game.

In the following years as i improved i tried various 3 woods but never found one i could hit well. In and out of the bag they went.

Last year i put a deep faced titleist 3 wood in the bag. Worked well off the tee, not so hot off the turf.

Recently put a titleist 4 wood in the bag. It has a shallow face and is superb off the turf. Just this last 2 weeks ive worked out how to hit a reliable fade with it. A tweak at set up and technique has been the key to that.

Its nice to have an option of a long club going into par 5s. Its been a long time coming.

If your a strong driver of ball and 5w matches your 3w for distance and you like it off deck as well, ditch 3w and get another wedge for scoring...personally My 5w is a fave club so it's stays in bag regardless....

It is illogical to say that you can hit a 5 wood further than a 3 wood.
It is a bit like saying I can hit my 8 iron further than my 1 Iron.

Perhaps it is your swing/technique you should be looking at.

Recently I've taken to leaving my 3 wood at home 😂 Waste of money really!! Brand new and bearly use it

I use my 5 wood off the deck or tee where needed

Driver to 5 wood

Not at all illogical.
Those extra few degrees of loft and the slightly shorter shaft can lead to a better connection, especially from the turf.
Most players ,in my opinion, would be better off with 16 or 17 degrees as their longest fairway
A 15° 3 wood from the deck is not an easy shot....

I sort of see where you're going with that but Henrik Stenson hits his 3w 300+ ....is it illogical he doesn't use driver instead?

us mere mortals however 5w/3w = approx 4deg loft and as little as 15 mm shaft length difference.....not much in that and as you say technique could well be the key there.........where as 8i -1iron? Massive difference in both......I think D Johnson hits his 8iron same as my 1iron!!😀

considering they say that the average person should take a shorter shafted driver and loft up to say 12 degree to gain distance I agree that a 5w could go further than a 3w

my 3 wood (old one) went further than my 5 wood when I caught it right however I would 9/10 catch the 5 wood perfectly but only 4/10 with the 3 wood so was useless to use a club that 6/10 will just worm burn the same length as a 5 wood would fly
