hi im pretty new to golf and i play with pro-vs but i hit a few into rivers etc so shall i keep using them and buying new ones or hit some of my older dunlops or old srixons??

:) probably one of the most common threads on here.

If you are new and/or not great, using a premium ball is expensive and will do little to help your game, although you might enjoy putting with it more.

I played a few holes the other day with a donnay titanium and happily mooched along with my normal mix of pars and bogeys. I could easily play a whole round with one or even some other distance rubbish. If I was trying (and good enough) to par every hole and show my genius around the greens (which I don't have :D) then I'd be crying out for a nice soft spinny ball.

Since my game went off the boil I have been using Pinnacle exception balls, and am still shooting my h/cap. Has made no difference to my score, I am just not so gutted when I lose them.

Pinacle are a bloody good ball for the price Murph, I have nearly used up all my slazenger cheapo's and intend moving to Pinacle ( I won a bunch of them and liked them on the greens) or lake Titleist.

I would avoid premium balls to start with unless you have a deep wallet as they are expensive to lose on a regular basis. There are so many good quality balls out there but for the best mix of distance and spin I'd look at the AD333 or Titleist NXT. However if you want something a bit more solid (won't spin as much) then Pinnacle balls are a good buy. I guess try a few makes and models out and see what suits

if you are new to the game like me then i would say keep with the cheaper balls.

i bought a box of 50 top condition top-flite golf balls off amazon for really cheap and they look like new.

lost one today, but found a cheap slazenger ball, i carried on playing with this and was hitting it the same as anything else.

thanks everyone i will buy lake balls and some pinnacles as you say are good and i wont care too much if i loose them
many thanks

Hold on a minute. No-one said anything about Lake Balls.

I'd seriously rather play sports-world specials that are new, round and not from a lake!

A ball sat in a pond that's been hit for 2 games and gets refurbished is not my idea of sense.

get some Donnays or Top-flites at 30-40p a ball or something.

Am I mad?

I concur. The problem with lake balls is there's no way of telling how long it has been submerged before being refurbished. Any significant period will have some detrimental effect and the problem is you'll never get two balls that perform the same so its one more variable you don't really need. I think you'd be much better sticking to cheap but NEW balls.

I don't think it matters what ball you play as long as it's the SAME ONE. Playing a Titleist then picking up a slazenger, then a top flite then a srixon isn't condusive to good golf. One it'll mess with your putting, two it'll mess with your yardages, possibly your control around the greens depending on your ability.

If you go cheap(er) then at least stick with the same cheap ball.

Ive just changed from Donnay Titanium to the Dunlop Loco Mad balls and have to say i love them! £6 for 15 isn`t to be sniffed at either, especially when your going to lose a few like i do.

go with whatever balls you can get for the cheapest. unless you buy driving range balls, i am sure you will be fine with whatever you can find. whether it be on the internet, choose a website that stocks good cheap balls with free postage.

... maybe even go down the route of lake balls, make sure they state good quality though, as they could pull some very messy balls out of them lakes.

if you want a high street shop, try sports direct, they are good stockists of cheap donnay/dunlop balls.

I don't think it matters what ball you play as long as it's the SAME ONE.
I love this argument. 99% of golfers say this.
I'm the 1% that argues unless you are seriously good at the game, feel free to swap whenever.

Let's do the maths eh :-P
Balls Lost Per round :Price of a dozen |1 |2 |3 |4 |5

Top-Flite XL: £6.99 |0.58p|£1.16|£1.74|£2.32|£2.90
Srixon: AD333: £13.99 |£1.16|£2.32|£3.48|£4.64|£5.80
Bridgestone E6: £19.99 |£1.67|£3.33|£5.00|£6.66|£8.33
Bridgestone B330: £23.99 |£2.00|£4.00|£6.00|£8.00|£10.00
TaylorMade TP Black: £29.99 |£2.50|£5.00|£7.50|£10.00|£12.50
Titleist Pro V1X: £29.99 |£2.50|£5.00|£7.50|£10.00|£12.50
Srixon Z Star X: £34.50 |£2.88|£5.75|£8.63|£11.50|£14.38
Titleist Pro V1: £34.99 |£2.92|£5.83|£8.75|£11.66|£14.58

Now you know how much it's going to cost you on an average as to how many balls you lose per game let's work out the monthly cost of a few examples.
i.e. If you play 4 times a month and lose on average 3 balls per game your monthly cost for the above balls would be 12 balls per month therefore it would cost you £6.99 for the lowest and £34.99 for the highest every month.

Once you actually write the figures down it suddenly becomes more real as to how much you can end up spending on balls each month, scary huh :-P
