Been having this debate with a number of people in the past week. The information on the R&A site is ambiguos to say the least.

I do not use a phone but am interested to know the answer!

A local rule needs to be in place to allow the use of DMDs, but does this allow the use of a DMD on a mobile phone? if not, can an additional local rule be put in place to allow this?

Covered very extensively elsewhere on this forum. Every question that you could ever wish to ask has already been asked and answered. Me? Don't use one so not that bothered :)

Basically yes you can use a phone, as long as that phone is not capable of temp measuring, wind speed etc etc...

From any guidance I have received and following the guidelines published by the R&A then Yes but depends on the phone and app used.

On a recent topic Rulefan and myself have discovered a bit of contradiction with regards to statements both of us have received from different rules officials. Basically advice I have received limits certain phones and apps, the advice Rulefan received only really restricts the app used as a DMD.

I had started (and do update from time to time) a list of phones that should comply. To be 100% sure a phone is ok I think that following that list is a good place to start, although I would say that as the creator. There is also some apps included on another page of it. Here is a link to the thread which includes a lot of discussion and also a link to said list. If the phone is on the list then you shouldn't be opening yourself up to any problems at all as long as the apps you use are ok.
