We played our winter pairs match today and on one of the greens we were trying to work out the putting order. My partner's ball and the opponents looked the same distance from the hole and it was hard to tell. Then something crossed my mind about DMD's.

I don't own one but wondered if people use them on greens for this sort of thing? Or just as an aid to measure your own putts , nearest the pin etc?

I'm not suggesting that I would just curious if a DMD can be used like this and if anybody does.

If there is so little difference between them that you can't pick it by eye then I doubt a Lar would be accurate enough... I think accuracy is +/- 1 yard

I think most DMDs can't get a reading under a certain yardage, mine won't pick anything up under 12yds.

Yeah, my Nikon defaults to 11.5 yards which seems a rather strange distance.

If it's not obvious, then a Laser (Nikon goes to 0.5 yds) isn't going to be show the difference either.

Either measure with the flag, from the flag or simply guess would be my recommendation.

Can't be use due to having to low a resolution either in laser or GPS.

Either pace it out or measure using the flag and even putter if needed. If to close to call then toss a coin. Wouldn't want to be spending ages on the green trying to work out who might be an inch closer.

Funny you should mention that, I'm getting custom fitted for one next week...

Be carefull when choosing. Some companies have started to jack the inches and make them shorter so the tape measure appears longer. A taylormade inch for example is actually 1 and a quater old inches. Better when you want distance but can't mess you up if you want closest to the pin.

I feel like an idiot now. Why have i never thought of this??
The flag stick should be marked in bands normally black and white each being 12 inches for this purpose, the other option would be to start at the hole and walk with heavy footsteps to your opponents ball along his chosen lie before declaring " i think its my honour"
