I volunteered for one of these, it was this afternoon, picking up old divots and filling the holes with soil and seed, it was backbreaking stuff. Anyone else down these?
Yeah we have them a few nights through the season. Usually groups of 5-6 do 4 holes each. I've done a couple and get some food and a drink thrown in at the end. I've been paired with the president the last two times, nothing like getting your face known!
sorting one out for about 3 weeks time....trying to get the greenstaff, catering staff and course access sorted is the tough bit; members seem happy to give their time (as long as the timing suits!)
We are organising one soon I hope. Hopefully a pint and pie afterwards for the effort. There will however be the nagging voice in the back of the head that say's the folk that do not put their divots back will not be there, as usual.
Did two last year. Had a good laugh and a great feeling when you see the benefits. I also carried a pitch mark repair tool and did a quick sweep over any greens I got near. Was handy while waiting for the tractor to be filled with another load of sand and seed and went down well with the staff.
Got treated to a fresh sandwiches and scones upon return all prepared by some of the lady members.
The only time ive done this i was a visitor at Chorley GC and they had set up on the 17th tee box plastic bags and boxes of seed mix and a sign asking all golfers not just members to take a bag of mix and fill any divots on that hole,i assume they move it to a different hole each day or week which i thought was a good idea..
I've done it a few times, but now the head greenkeeper prefers that the greenstaff do it.
I used to get very irritated as every time we had a divot party we would run into the same group of blokes who played 4 times a week who "couldn't spare the time" to join in. The Club put a notice up that divot party had priority on the course that day hurrah!
