We've had this debate numerous times on here and generally I'm with the majority that accuracy is more important than distance, however I find myself in a position where I'm slap bang in the middle and can't decide which way to go.

I have in my possession 2 sets of clubs, Titleist 710CB and Mizuno MP62, I bought the Mizuno's about 18 months ago and used them through the winter last year but spotted the the Titleist going cheap on ebay last March so bought them with the view of if I don't like them I'll get my money back. So my problem is the Mizuno's are pretty straight and I was hitting a lot of greens but I needed to use 2 clubs more to get the distance, the Titleist immediately restored my distances but doubled my dispersion. Being a man I couldn't sacrifice that much distance and figured I could work on the Titleist accuracy so stuck with them and sold my Mizuno's to a mate. 1 Year and no payment later I have them back and had a quick go with them with the same results, more accurate but up to 2 clubs more per shot.

To give you some figures which were done with my GPS watch calculated by hitting 2 lots of 10 balls for each club and ignoring duffs(which were in approx equal amounts for each club)
....................Titleist.............................................Mizuno
..............Distance Dispersion .........(In Yards). .........Dist...... Disp
7 iron ........158.........19 ........................................139...... 11
6 iron ........174.........18.........................................153...... 13

Would you swap you current irons for a tighter dispersion but needing to use a 5 iron instead of a 7 iron?

The MP62's shouldnt be 2 clubs shorter, what shaft is in each?

Reason I ask is I got MP53's and was at least a club shorter, now I have MP69's with a better shaft and much longer

Think I would prefer the accuracy still, as long as you can hit your 5 iron as well as the 7, then what's the problem? It's better to be on the short stuff than in a bunker or in heavy grass?

If I could hit the 5 iron as accurately as a 7 iron - then No Problemo from my point of view.

With irons especially, accuracy is waaaaay more important than distance.

What shafts are in them...?

You might be comparing different shafts which can make a distance differential.
Also look at the lofts.

At the end of the day, if the Mizzy's work why worry if you have to hit a club or two more...?

with irons its a harder call than with driver with your handicap the tighter the dispersion the better as youve not got many shots to throw away and 6 yards can mean the difference between putting and chipping.

Why such a big difference are the shafts to blame? or is it it stronger lofts if this is the case its not actually 2 clubs its the number on the bottom of them which varies!

Distance is for Drivers accuracy for irons every time.
What you are doing is not really a direct comparison you need to check the dispersion on the clubs you are hitting the same distances no point comparing one that goes 158 with one that goes 139.

I'd use the Titleists. I am not getting a 5 iron out for 150 yards. No way.

I also think there is something in the dispersion calcs. You need to compare two clubs which go 150 to get a true picture, regardless of what is written on the club.

Have you compared shaft length, loft and lie on the two sets?

I'd use the Titleists.
I would rather use a shorter club to hit at a green.
Practice and have lessons to get more accurate with them.

Its very odd that there is so much difference in two sets of clubs, I have just checked and as standard both clubs have the same lofts. I would have to believe and would be interested to know if the Titliest have had the lofts strengthened.

I agree with Murph though, I think dispersion would be better the shorter a club hits so you maybe have to look at the 6/5 iron of the Mizuno against the 7 iron of the Titleist.

Something is not as it seems here though, I would have to think you have a consistent strike and have tested this pretty thoroughly.

Got a mate in the pro shop that can check the lofts for you?

Is it possible the old Mizuno "forged" clubs have weakened over time? the yardages on the Titleist sound more normal to me.

Not played forged club, but have heard others mention that the loft/lies need checked regularly.

Whats the usual for forged irons when playing lots - do they tend to go weaker or stronger?

Id take accuracy too.....
Currently im using Ping i10's......Im pretty accurate with the short and middle irons....7 iron goes about 150 yards....
The long irons for me as im sure most people are the same are less accurate...
If i was to change for more accurate clubs then i reckon that id have to go down the G20 route staying with Ping..
Im not sure if id get over the chunky looks though...Even though they would probably suit my shot shape and swing style to a tee....

Would you swap you current irons for a tighter dispersion but needing to use a 5 iron instead of a 7 iron?

Iv also had a quick peek at the Specs of both clubs as im sure you have yourself...

Just as an example the lofts for each 7 iron is 35 degrees....The mizuno's are a 1/4 in shorter in length probably not a big issue the bounce on both is very different and the lie on both clubs have a 1.5 degree difference also....

You'll need someone of the Techie nature to sort out that lot...And as has been said maybe its a shaft issue!
