I've often heard the commentators saying that good distance control will always shoot lower than someone being online but being either short or long. In a prefect world you would have both - good distance and line

If you are consistently 10 yards short or 10 yards long....how is that worse than being 10 yards left or 10 yards right.

surely it depends on the layout of the particular hole you're playing

any thoughts?

My thought for what its worth... I'd say if you're 10 yards long or short there'd be more potential to have an uphill/downhill putt. 10 yards left or right and you'd have angles to play with perhaps but not have to worry overly re judging pace over and above the green speed?

I would rather be short and in the fairway than left and in the rough!!

Psychological thing IMO. If its online players think it has more chance of going in if they had hit it a bit harder/softer. 10 yards left or right has no chance of going in. But the reality is a miss is a miss wherever it goes, 10 yards is 10 yards.

I think it's more to do with the predictability (and danger) of any miss.

If you know that your will tend to be left (or right), but the distance correct, then you can go for more pins or areas with confidence that you can fly danger - which tends to be front.

But a smart course will have pins spread around greens to test all parts of a player's game.
