Thought I'd start a new rolling thread for peoples' disaster stories! (apologies if one already exists - couldn't find one)

Today, I pulled my iron off the first tee into the fringe of the rough just behind and to the right of a tree. My initial thought, as I was heading towards my ball, was to just chip it out onto the fairway, but I had a really decent lie and decided to go for the green with a 4 iron. I was absolutely sure that I had enough clearance from the tree to make it a non-issue.

Turns out that when you hit a tree trunk with the middle of the shaft during the follow through, the club head momentum continues and initially bends the shaft...then snaps it. Needless to say my sister found it hilarious. I was rather distressed.

The ball landed in a green-side bunker by the way, which just added insult to injury!

Any other disaster stories?

As a side note, I'm not really sure what to do now because I was about to sell my G10s in order to part fund a new set of irons. Now I have a matched set with a broken club. How easy is it to source AWT regular shafts? Is it worth me replacing the shaft before selling the set, or just selling the 4 iron head with the rest of the set? A look on the auction place shows 4-SW sets of G10s going for about £180 in decent condition, which mine are (were).

Too many to mention. I've done the snapped shaft on a tree trick. Very annoying and you will find that out of action club would be the ideal one for a lot of shots on the remaining holes. Just the golfing gods rubbing salt in the wound

I did the same with my 5 iron out of the rough last year playing with my dad. Hit a cracking shot just short of the green but hit a tree branch on the follow through and ended up with just the grip in my hands. Then spent 5 minutes looking for the rest of the club without success before returning to where I'd played from and finding it resting in the branches of the tree about 8ft off the ground.

Did you make the up and down for par though ???

During last autumn I teed off from a raised teeing area and made a really cracking drive that was long and straight , I was so pleased with my effort that I was like a dog with two tails.

As I skipped away from the tee I missed my footing and slid down the muddy bank on my bottom with an extraordinary amount of wet mud stuck to my backside and my playing partners wetting themselves with laughter.

Its bloody hard to look as if you know what you are doing on the course with a shed load of mud stuck to your bum.

No I didn't, being a 23 handicapper I was just happy to get the ball out of the bunker on the first try! Ended up with a 2 putt bogey. I did get 3 pars on the 7, 8 & 9 though down the front 9 which was nice (par 3, 5 and 4 respectively). Who needs a 4 iron!

Once played an 8 iron shot from under a tiny wee birch tree. No problems at all except likelihood of brushing through some small twiggy branches on the follow through. Played a nice shot, ending in the classic "pose" as I watched the ball land just short of green. But not knowing I only had half a shaft in my hands. Daft thing was I didn't clip anything thicker than 1/4 inch thick - just managing to catch the club in the fork of two tiny branches was enough. Been wary ever since.

Real disaster was today taking 4 shots to get past the ladies tee on our 4th. (A total of about 25 yards)
