So after joining my first club a few weeks ago I finally got round to putting my first card in for my first ever handicap!
Been playing golf for 8 months now and for the past month or so have been averaging 15-16 over par off the yellows on our par 70 course, yesterday I went round in 13 over and all was looking good for today's new adventure, I said to myself I'd be happy at around 20 over as I've never played off the whites!
Hole 1 is a medium 170 par 3 and I managed to walk away with an 8!!! What a start!!!
This was followed by 3 double bogeys in a row and then came the next par 3 which I walked away with a 7!!!
By this time I'm thinking what's goin on as I've never played this bad!!! The rest of the round consisted of 1 birdie 3 pars a few bogeys and a lot of doubles!!
Then came the par 4 18th, managed to drive it straight under some conifers which cost me 5 shots to get out of!!!! And ended up with a 10!!!
End result was a score of 105 and 35 over par!!! I am absolutely disgusted at the way I've played today :sbox:

I shot 86 on Tuesday off the yellows, 106 today off the whites. It's just the way this silly game goes, and it's the reason you will keep coming back each time.

You've probably put too much pressure on yourself.
If it's any consolation, for handicapping purposes, your disasters will round down to double bogeys. So based on the info you've given you'll actually be 9 shots better. Assuming your course CSS is 70 this would give you a h/cp of 26.
Remember also that it's the best of the 3 cards that count, so you can improve on this.

One thing I will say though is about the 78 year old gentleman I was paired with today, what a nice, friendly and helpful man he was! He was trying to keep me positive and restoring my confidence throughout the round, and fair play to him he was still crunching 200+ yard drives hole after hole!

I'm off 20 at the moment and was feeling good last week, just carded a 86 ( off yellows ) and put my name down for a mid week comp.

Just standing on the whites messed my head up and ended up carding a 103 and that could have been a lot more but thankfully I chipped in from off the green twice in the round.

Having another go tomorrow off the whites but this time just a knock about to get used to them.

Yeah I'm out first thing in the morning and also going to play off whites so we'll see how it goes

Just looked at an old scorecard and it says the SSS off the whites is 69? What does this mean?

Nothing abnormal in your score Dan. That's how you learn to play.

You were probably thinking too much about the back tees when the problem is more likely to be the pencil in your hand and writing down the reality of your ability to play golf at the moment.
Five shots to get out of the trees has nothing to do with the length of the course.
I am certain that you will learn and improve quickly.
There is an art to golf and an art to scoring.

I'd defo say the pressure, the PGA at the Belfry is a difficult course and since joining in Feb I'm yet to break 90 on it but can consistently go around the Derby in the 80's. Yesterday I went out and having played very little golf throughout the past few weeks I thought I'm just going to enjoy the sun. After a bogey, then a triple I thought thank god the weathers nice, ended up with a 88 and 37 points (18HCP) and must have 3 putted 7 or more greens  didn't feel like I played well at all but the scorecard never lies. Moral of the story relax although I admit it is easier said than done.

wait till you have to play of the blues (or pro tees),played in a county comp years ago and not knowing the course had a recce the week before the comp, after playing off the visitors tee on the first i played off the members medal tee's to get an idea for the comp, immagine my surprise when the comp was off the pro tees some were 80 yards further back and in completely different angles to the fairways, suppose it serves me right for playing off the whites.

Same for me yesterday...

I play nicely on Saturday, shot an 89 for 40 points and walked off with the cash. Yesterday in an optional Stableford qualifier I shot a gross 108 for 26 points. Everything that had worked for me on Saturday had left me by Sunday. I knew I was on to a loser when I pull hooked a 9 iron out of bounds on the first hole.

SSS is standard scratch score, handicaps are calculated against this rather than par, briefly the idea being to try and ease the difference in course difficulty as you can say have a par 70 course ranging in total yardage say from 5000 to 6500. Generally if a course had a SSS lower than par as regarded as either short or a little easy to par in places and the opposite if SSS is above par there will be holes which are difficult to par.

Well been out again on the whites today although it was nothing
Official,
Apart from giving away 10 shots in a disaster on the 3rd and 4th par 4's with two 9's it was a lot better today, finished the back 9 off +4 and ended up going round in 95 (+25) so hopefully I'm going back in the right direction!

A bit of confidence back then today and around +19 on that card if it would have been for handicap somewhere near what you had expected in the OP so going in the right direction you are.

Yeah Defo a bit of confidence restored today although after the first couple of holes I was thinking "here we go again"
if I can do away with giving away such cheap shots through lack of concentration or playing the complete wrong shot when in trouble then I feel there's a half decent game in me!

It won't be the last time you have a disaster off the whites. These big scores especially on par 3's seem to me as though there are course management or short game issues that need closer inspection. Sounds like you were trying way too hard
