Forgot to mention this but it came up in the clubhouse yesterday evening.

On saturday night, a crowd of yobs got on our course and have destroyed one of the greens, they used a pickaxe or something of that ilk and completely dug it up.

What do these low-lifes get out of doing this??? There are no ongoing disputes with anybody so obviously it was just mindless vandalism.

Gits.

It happens quite alot these days sadly. Its the nanny state we live in. Its bread a nation of youngsters without respect or care for their actions.

Hopefully your greenkeeper can salvage and repair what damage has been done.

Dirty Scumbags Indeed.....

At our course we get the odd break in and generally they do "peel outs" on the greens.

Thankfully they have never had the idea to use a pickaxe!

Touch wood we haven't had that problem even when we were in the middle of Ascot racecourse. The worst we suffered would be burn marks from portable B-B-Q's during Ascot Week. Never had any trouble with vandalism on the greens although the pr shop has been broken into both at our new locale and our old site.

Even going back to when I was at Wimbledon Common we never had problems with vandals and this was common land frequented by kids on bikes all the time particularly in the school hols.

Hope your greenkeeper can work some magic for you

I think part of the problem may be that whilst there are no specific ongoing disputes, part of our course backs onto one of the worst council/housing association streets in the whole of kent.

Quite often you will get called a w@nker or similar by people walking down the alleyway or shouts of "fore" will come as you start your downswing. A very good number of members dish out a bit of stick back to these morons so perhaps taht is what happened. I know I have done it before in the heat of the moment as have most of us.

Another theory that has been touted at the club is that people do this out of jealousy. The theory put forward is that some of the rougher council tenants (because not all council tenants are automatically scum despite what some think) see the course as a sign of affluence and seeing us golfers (who they wrongly beleive are a crowd of wealthy toffs) really gets their backs-up as they are potless and spend all day seeing "millionaires" jollying it up on the course. This leads to bitterness and when pissed one night, nasty nigel jumps over his fence which backs onto the 5th and does a bit of amateur greenkeeping.

It has happened before and sadly it will happen again, I still think that the greenstaff should have given my thought to putting bear-traps in the rough by their usual point of entry out at night, then the vandals under cover of darkness as they do their wicked deeds may have a nasty surprise!

Sadly this happens on my course about 6 or 7 times a year. They are not malicious, just stupid vandals.

It will happen again.

In 20 years time they will be applying for membership, that is the ironic thing.
