Went to Direct Golf on Sunday as I had some birthday money along with some winnings from the racing at Cheltenham & Fakenham. Money burns a hole in my pocket. I was in the market for a Driver mainly and maybe a putter, turns out I came home with 1 of each.

As we arrived we had a good look round and when I was ready I decided to approach the desk and asked if I could try out some drivers, he asked what ones I would like and to start with I took out a R11s, RBZ, titleist 910 d2 and a Nike VR. He gave me some tokens for the range and said I will get you regular flex in 10.5 just see how they all feel dont worry about distance as once you have decided on a couple we can then sort that in the fitting booth. So after being out there 20 mins he come over and asked how I was getting on he immediately stated I would need a stiff shaft so once I had got it down to a couple drivers we could sort this out. He then said is there any you dont like and I gave him back the Nike & Titleist, he then mentioned about how a John Letters driver had been coming out well for lots of people so also bought one of them out too. I think this was due to Direct Golf having a push on JL items but after hitting it a few times he said nah that isnt the club for you and took it off me.

So I had the selection down to the R11s and the RBZ we went to the fitting booth where he also bought along a Callaway razr hawk. He got them in a 9.5 or 10.5 in a stiff shaft. I tried the 3 out and all went very similar the R11s and the Hawk was carrying about 240 then RBZ around the 230-235 mark. It was at this point he said my swing speed was averaging about 112mph and that if I was planning on having lessons and I got my swing grooved 100% then it maybe worth looking at x flex which they recommend for 114mph+ he said although you maybe hit it slightly better the margin for error is very small. So at this point I said I will stick with the stiff shaft if the x flex doesnt have much forgiveness.

After finding out the facts he asked me how much was I looking to spend and I said I didnt really want to pay £329 for the callaway so he took that away, and I was left with the R11s or RBZ, now I wasnt too keen on the sound of the R11s as it was quite loud and unusual. I said price wise I am looking at the RBZ, so the lad took the RBZ and said I will just make an adjustment to see if it gets you hitting the same as R11s, it appeared to work and he said thats the one for you.

I was really impressed that he didnt rush me and that he didnt try the hard sell to get the extra £100, he got something to suit me not just the profits. He explained the stats and was just helpful in general. It was this that made me look at putters as well and ended up bringing home a putter too.

So onto today I had a day off work and decided to go test this driver out a bit more at the local range. I started off hitting them nicely and straight decent distance too without no effort. I then decided I would try and put one out there a bit and I started hiting them left and hooking a bit. It wasnt until it clicked that when I am trying to put one out there I swing faster and it mucks everything up. I went back to swing smoothly as my swing speed is plenty quick enough naturally and it all went back to straight again. So thankfully thats a good lesson learnt before I take this out onto the course.

Overall very happy with the service and thought I should mention it on here as it is something positive for the company.

Which one did you go to, have had people say all sorts of things about DG on here but the service I have received from the Cambridge store has been first class. They spend over 2 hours working with my dad when he came back to the game after 10 years and needed new irons.

Great bunch of lads there, never any sales pressure and nothing is too much trouble. It was the staff their that pointed me in the direction of my JPX800 driver and could not be happier

Enjoyed reading your post jammag.

I have not had the best of service from Direct Golf, I think that by the sounds of things they are similar to American Golf, you get some good stores and some bad ones.

What putter did you get?

Also did you get the 9.5 or 10.5 RBZ?

Thanks. Yeah I thought stores tend to get criticised in public more than positive so I thought I would share my good experience. I got the odyssey white ice no7 and got the RBZ in 10.5 although it is adjustable up to 1.5 either way, but I am going to leave it as it is now.
