So I've been a member of two clubs in my short golfing career, and I'm looking at rejoining one ASAP. I was all set for course A, which is the better course, better club and more enjoyable to me. However my other choice, Course B is going through changes that will make it more enjoyable, although the overall experience will still be a way off Couse A.

Now two big factors that have made me swing a little more towards Course B are 1. The cost, there's about £4/500 a year difference. This isn't a problem in itself as I'm prepared to pay more for the course A. But this then leads me to issue 2. Course B has hardly been closed at all over the recent wet spell whereas Course A has hardly been open.

As it seems that extreme weather is becoming more normal I could see myself paying more for a lot less golf, which I wouldn't want to do. At the end of the day we all want to be out golfing instead of sitting in the house.

What would you do?

Oh Fish is a member of course A so that could swing some votes one way or another 😉

Is travel time to each course about the same from where you work and live? That would be a factor for me as well. If it's about playing then B, use the saved annual membership to either enter some open competitions at other courses or treat yourself to a couple of nice away days at expensive 'bucket list' courses.

I live halfway between them and they're both a long way from work 👍🏿. I play all year round and would play 52 weekends a year if the course was open.

Do either club, A especially, offer alternative forms of memberships, which a lot of clubs do, where it is possible to purchase credits, which you use depending on when you play. Course closures then aren't going to affect what you pay annually. If B did a similar thing is it not possible to play B mostly in the winter and A during the drier spring /summer months?
May be worth enquiring.

Not sure Id be paying too much attention to the fact that course A has been closed a fair chunk of the last few weeks, pretty much every decent course within 50 miles of where you are has been too, certainly wouldnt be putting much weighting on it.

For me course A is a cracking track and amazed it took so long for another forumite to work out that was the best place for him to be a member, its certainly where Id join if I was based round there!

Good luck wherever you (re) join!

But said forumite has cut a frustrated figure of late having not been able to play. Another forumite at the other course has been playing regularly and even signing in other forumites yesterday. I definitely prefer the better course but I want to be out playing as much as possible.

If you were making this decision in the summer would you be basing a lot of the decision on which course is open most during 2 weeks of the worst rainfall weve had for years and years, I wouldnt be. I know what you're saying I just think I would be basing the decision on other factors (ie the better course for the other 50 weeks of the year) assuming cost isnt a big deal (obviously that would be a big factor in choosing B over A)

As a member of B, I'll freely admit that A is much the better course and has a far superior clubhouse.
The recent wet weather we've had has, as pointed out above, been exceptional and seen many courses closed, I don't know how A holds up in a normal winter but I wouldn't base my decision on just this year without asking around at club A.

The other high priority factor of a club for me is the friendliness of other members.
I can't comment on A for this one (apart from one member, who I've heard is a bit of a knob ;)) as I've never been a member there but B certainly ticks this box for me.

it's a tough call Rich but I think either option is a good choice, not that that helps your decision!

(Edit - With you now having been a member at A and saying that you find it much more enjoyable, I think that if you go back to B you're more likely to regret the decison, and on that basis I'm voting A)

Thanks Nick, you've just clarified why I'm having such a dilemma. I was hoping you'd come along with an answer to help swing me one way or another. 😜

A big decision is do I want to accompany you more often than that other fella???? (Who for the record I think is a truly delightful chap, even if he supports a dodgy foreign footy club).

It's been interesting watching the poll as b had run away with it until a few of you chaps who've experienced one or both came along and it's starting to swing the other way.

ive just voted A after reading your opening statement, however after reading down and seeing Nicks comment, realise i am a member at B! is either closer to home or work? that would certainly sway me.
