Our old pro was not popular and have bought my last 2 sets from a local pro at another club. Really helpful guy, top of the range GC2 monitor, sells my old clubs andI have had lessons with him and these are continuing.

Our new pro who has been with us 8 months, enthusiastic highly motivated, friendly and a great guy who I have had a few lessons during the winter months. His fitting equipment is not as upto date.

I feel I should be loyal to my new pro but the guy at the other club has been really helpful, told me at times that I would be no better off changing clubs once which I really appreciated and feel I will return to him.

Very much a case of heart and head!

What do you think?

If you are determined to buy from a "pro" rather than on-line, I would give the new guy a try. He's your pro after all and you'd be lost without him.
Benefit of buying from him is that if you do have a problem with them over time he is going to bend over backwards (or he SHOULD) to help you out.
His fitting equipment may not be as up to date, but he got to become a teaching pro by learning the trade, so he should know what he's looking for.
That's assuming he is being reasonably competitive in his pricing obviously.
;)

Agree with Smiffy, but would add that even if his prices are higher than AG or other retailers give him a chance to price match. He might not be able to match the price but might be able to get close to it. I went to my pro for a driver fitting and paid £25 for the fitting itself which would be deducted from the price of a new driver if I got it from him. The one I liked was £45 cheaper at AG than he had it. Mentioned this to him and he did it for the AG price and then to my surprise knocked off the £25 I paid for the fitting as well. Always worth asking.

Which is what I meant ;)

I bought my i15 irons from the pro at Highwoods (where I was a member at the time). He was within a whisker of what I could get them for on-line, and he dropped his price quite happily (I'm not great at haggling!).
I purchased them straight off the shelf, he told me to try them out for a month or two to see how I got on with them, and if I felt they needed adjustment in any way he would have a look at them for me and carry this out completely free of charge.
I got on with them from day one, so never took him up on his offer, but it gave me confidence knowing he was there to help me.
He wouldn't have done that had I bought them on-line
;)

Which one would you rather offend, the new one you buy Mars bars from on the one who your improving your game with and have history of trust with.

As great as the new pro is, if you explained your reasons of not using him I bet he would understand

I was in a similar position up to a year ago, a pro who I wouldn't have lessons with and couldn't hardly ever do a deal with and so bought myself golf stuff where I got the best deal. Our new pro is very personable and I now have bought irons and other gear from him and he will always price match with American Golf and anyone else he can. I do go elsewhere for the odd lesson as I have a pro that I really trust with my swing and I did a Sam putting Lab lesson with a different pro as he was the only one locally who has the setup.

I am contemplating a change of irons with Callaway and my pro doesn't have Trackman so I just got him to book a fitting at Callaway, there is no cost and I'll see how competitive he can be on price before I take the plunge!

I think it's your game and, ultimately, it's what's best for you that is the prime concern whilst doing your best to support the pro where possible

I'd buy from the Pro I've used before, that I trust, especially if you feel you were fitted well previously.
You said he's talked you off changes in the past, so is obviously very trustworthy too, and not just after trying to grab your £££.

You have a good relationship with the pro you've built up - be a shame to change imo.

Pretty much my thoughts

the replies are almost 50/50 which is my problem and I appreciate your input. Late last year I mentioned something about The GC2 at the other club and our pro was not too happy.

I ended up explaining my predicament and in this day and age they are both great guys highly competitive but sometimes feel it is better the guy you know.

Incidentally they are both on facebook trying to outdo each other with what offers they have and how their coaching is helping juniors etc.

Personally I think that today you should be fitted using a launch monitor such as GC2. As if you are not there may always that nagging doubt that the clubs/shaft you have may not be the optimum for your swing. I suspect in reality unless you are playing off low single figures it won't make a whole heap of difference which one you chose. But the mind is a strange thing. ;)

Buy from which ever pro you think will give you the best fitting for the clubs. Your going to be spending a lot of money, so forget being loyal, it's your money so spend it where it suits you best.

You could always just buys a packet of tees and a mars bar from the other one if your still feeling guilty

Opinions are clearly divided, so i'll ask you, what would YOU prefer to do?

All things being equal, who would you like to buy from?

That's likely your answer.

I personally would buy from a guy who does a custom fit and have been to before if it doesnt come down to price. Depending on budget it may not be viable but this is certainly the way forward.

I had a fitting with a chap who after informing him of my budget told me to get some clubs second hand and have them reshafted, loft and lie adjusted and saved me a few hundred quid. My game (initially) improved greatly. Then my head got involved and F%$ked it all up! haha

Point is I will always go back to him, even if it is just for some balls or a new putter etc as he really sorted me out. Could have held his ground and told me I needed to spend a fortune on new gear but didnt.

I'd be buying from the guy you used last time as he knows your game especially if you still use him for lessons. Why not start with your club pro with sundries and maybe something like new wedges or putter (if you are in the market) and see where it goes.
