Never been much of a divot taker, i sometimes take a small one with my wedges but thats about it. I tried getting a more downward strike on the ball last winter but it just messed my swing up so ive gone back to picking it off the deck cleanly, sometimes grazing the turf a bit. I dont really generate a lot of backspin but my course is very linksy so during the summer months bump and runs are the order of the day, and during the winter the greens are so soft you could play a topspin smash and the ball will still stop dead! So, how do you hit yours.

Im a sweeper too. Never much of a divot for me right through my clubs. I do need to work on hitting down more as during the summer months a little back spin on the greens would be very handy!

Normally a good old digger, some days arent. But you can never have a big enough divot on short irons!

Sweeper. It goes back to my hockey days. I try to take a divot and if I get into a groove with my swing and get a divot then the quality of my ball striking, trajectory etc are signifcantly improved. I just can't do it consistently.

in general its a shallow divot in summer and a slightly deeper one when its very soft ,
the summer divot rarely is a proper divot more a harsh grass cutter type.

For those saying they're sweepers and need to work on hitting down more, could be all you need do is make sure your grip is strong enough (not a weak grip) and move the ball back a little in the stance for mid and short irons, that's it, swing the same as you're doing and you'll be hitting before the swing arc bottoms out so therefore on a downward path so more likely to take a divot (once the ball is soaring to target and loaded with grippy backspin!).

Sounds VERY familiar!

Steve Stricker made a decent career out of not taking a divot.

I'm still learning my swing but although I would like a more downward strike at this time of year when you are off by a fraction it's magnified.

Divot man here. Usually a bacon slice, or a little deeper with the short irons. Occasionally take a bit of a bacon slice with a fairway wood if its sat down a bit.

Hitting down is bad advice.

It is so easily misapplied in the actual swing, resulting in so many issues.

People end up getting very steep and it's hard to fix.

I agree though that people like myself who pick the ball need to change their swing if they want to hit the ball with more backspin.

My shots are low and not spiny due to the fact I have this problem, it cannot be fixed with just "hitting down".
