After getting through the first round of the matchplay at my club I had my second round match yesterday morning. It was the only time we could both play and it was during the medal tee times so we decided to play in that at the same time which obviously meant no gimmies.

So how would you approach the round? Play it like a normal strokeplay round and let the result of each hole take care of itself or change your approach depending on what your opponent was doing and possibly risk wrecking your card going for a risky shot so as not to lose a hole?

Didn't think you were allowed to play 2 different formats at the same time regardless of gimmees.

I approach matchplay totally different from strokeplay, I don't care what my score is at all as long as its one less than the guy i'm playing. In my first round match at my club I won at the 2nd extra hole and won that with a bogey, the only score that matters in matchplay is the one that wins regardless of what it is.

You might be surprised to hear you can't play a medal at the same time as a knockout.......

33-1. Conditions; Waiving Rule
The Committee must establish the conditions under which a competition is to be played.

The Committee has no power to waive a Rule of Golf.

Certain specific Rules governing stroke play are so substantially different from those governing match play that combining the two forms of play is not practicable and is not permitted. The result of a match played in these circumstances is null and void and, in the stroke play competition, the competitors are disqualified.

What are these rules that are significantly different because it is common practice at my club.

You play to the strokeplay rules and if you take less shots on a hole than your opponent you win the hole. What's the problem?

Penalties are different in Matchplay...eg if you tee off in front of the tee markers in Matchplay, you can ask your opponent to retake the shot, whereas in a medal, the penalty is 2 shots and you MUST replay the shot. Just one example, there are many more.

as a very simple example - he plays a wrong ball, you then also play a wrong ball, he scores 8 you score 9...........but at it's most basic; he tees off outside the teeing area - what's now?

How do you play the 'match' if you are not also playing in a Medal?

He replays the tee shot and gives himself the appropriate penalty on his card and for the matchplay score he just continues with the second tee shot as if it was his first.

Ahh but you are not obligated to make him replay. What if he hooks that first tee shot into the deep clag? You won't want him getting a mulligan, but he cannot play that ball under strokeplay rules.

but you might not choose to get him to replay the first shot in the match if he's carved it OOB........etc etc etc

edit - beaten to it, did I really take 2 mins to type that???? :mmm:

This used to go on at our place when people struggled to complete their match play round before the deadline so some combined it with a monthly comp.

A definite no-no!
