Played in my club's Open on Sunday. Two rounds. Results sheet shows:

Round 1: Home CSS 72: Visitor CSS 73
Round 2: Home CSS 72: Visitor CSS 74

What's that about? I played well in not too easy conditions both rounds especially afternoon when wind really picked up (Nett 72 am and 73 pm) and so I was hoping for a cut against CSS but looks like I won't be?

All players - home or visitors - played the same course in the same conditions. Why the differentiation? I want to be cut!

If there are more than 20 away players & home players then two are calculated. It's your home course though so seems fair to me

i play a fair few opens and thats about standard i think. anyway its your home course so should be easier for you than a visitor

Fair enough if that is how it generally works - though as the field was principally single figure players and so all should have been able to cope with the conditions...

Just seems a little against the principle of universal h/cap and course SSS

how so?

you have a clear advantage around your home course compared to a visitor that may have never played the course.

Never as simple as that, I played my old course open 2 months after leaving (had been a member 10 years) VCSS was 74, 3 shots above HCSS, I ended up with a 2 shot cut.......

Statically the visitors CSS is higher than the home players CSS so no surprise the results published are this.

It has a fairly sound basis in statistics (generally quoted as around 1.4 shots advantage to home players), and is pretty fundamentally reflected in club match results (where it's common for 2 identical teams to both win at home against each other).

Played an Open a few weeks ago. Shot 15 over (no blobs) playing off of 13. Got cut to 12 due to visitor CSS being 2 more than the home CSS.

Back to my rightful place now though

El Bandito! Am I the only forum member with a correct handicap?

I wasn't really complaining - just curious as I had never played in an (individual) Open before - neither at my home club or elsewhere.

Anyway - was cut 0.2 - so back down to 9.9 :) Reasons to be cheerful.

Well done on the .2

I'm surprised to hear that you don't enter any Open's, shocked actually when it's so easy to plan/enter and you organise a wee trip with some mates. Are you new to golf?

Not new at all. In fact been playing 45yrs :)

At a previous club for many years I played society and club matches at many courses across Avon, Somerset, Glos and Wilts and had my fill without Opens, so it's not something I've ever done. Besides my wife thinks that I pay enough for my golf and was p****d off with me that I paid £45 to play two rounds of my own course in my clubs Open.

And I don't have any mates...
