Difference in Irons in 4 years?

I don't think the technology moves very fast. Some pros use sets of irons from years ago, and they can get the latest stuff fitted to within a millimetre. If you are hitting your irons well, no reason you can't continue to do so.

So I'm currently playing the original Cobra Amps (the first time we saw the Orange), came out in 2012 apparently, although I must admit, I thought I'd had them a bit longer than that. I'm really liking the look of the new I Series irons from Ping but am I really going to notice that much difference from my Amps?

I haven't been playing very long, so my experience is worth nothing, but I do play with good players, and my best mate is an experienced pro. No, golf technology doesn't move on very quickly, and taking into account the fundamentals of a club, how could it. That said, clubs compared to 20 years ago are a lot better, whilst clubs compared to 5 years ago aren't. Needless to say, quality varies a lot, but that isn't always reflected by the brand names. Buying new clubs requires a fair bit of research, and if you have the dosh it is even better to get them fitted.

If you are looking for something more compact, forged but forgiving have a look at JPX 850 Forged. I absolutely love mine and gained 6 yards on my 2010 AP1 6 iron. So not a massive gain but I hit them much better than my old irons...

My irons are four years old now

I have tried many irons in that same period and only one set has given me better results - Titliest CB Forged

I don't think technology changes massively but there will always be small changes and it depends if you are moving from Forgiving clubs to Playets irons etc

stuff moves in very small increments of improvement as a norm - occasionally you get some that maybes move it in one ways or another a little bit more perhaps the latest to maybes do that being the parsons xtreme 0311's

but also you gotta look at are the two different models for real, like for like - maybes the 'amps' to the new 'i's are not really a direct comparison

from what I remember the amps offer a little ways more help in the strike by their construction - more heel & toe chunk, head a mite meatier iron head plus some sort of an added face construction from 7 or 6i up for tad more ball speed - whereas the new 'i' series although real good clubs are not in that kinda iron bracket

depends a good bunch on how much you strike center as a norm - only ways to know for sure is to a & b the amps & i's on a launch monitor to have the evidence of the results

sounds like an itch to change clubs - if you got the $'s and feel for a change obviously that's a personal decision - but for sure I'd check the sets out against each other would say my take probably a little less overall help in off center strikes with the 'i's down to what their design intention was

had my miz mp33's for over 10 years the heads been refurbished couple of times plus re-shafted a bunch - but finally had to change them as had round indentations depressions in the sweet spots but only changed to the apex pro's (sig below) just over year ago

My ball striking is pretty good so I think I could definitely move on to a "players" set, just not entirely sure I'll gain a huge amount. The two main things that are bugging me about my Amps though is that A) They aren't Ping (I went from Ping to Cobra and am now going back it seems) and also the bloody ferules keep coming loose!!

Then maybe I would suggest looking at things like the AP2's or PSI - players clubs with improved forgiveness

i think it was mentioned at the weekend that Soren Kjeldson is using irons that are 10 years old, i play with guys that use irons that are 15 to 20 years old all good players and none of them think they are missing out.
