Diesel scrappage scheme

How times have changed! Only two years ago they were promoting diesels heavily for company car users due to their benefits! The data clearly shows this is the next global health scandal waiting to happen. Similar to smoking for the lungs in the long term.

Its all about electric cars now - I have a tesla and a nissan leaf so totally free of petrol now. Never going back. Its like moving from a horse to a ferrari - no contest! Twice as fast and so much more spacious.

Cheers

Seems daft to me. I drive an 11 year old diesel. If some one offered me 1000 off a new car to trade mine in, i would still be about 30,000 short of buying a replacement car. I cant see why i would want to do this, and would have thought that most people driving old diesels do so because they cannot afford a new car. Even a cheap one.

I would love a tesla but it is only about 60k out of my budget.

So if we all start driving electric cars then what about the demand on the electricity supply and the effect this will have on the environment anyway.

and wouldn't get me to a number of my destinations. I'd need another car for those journeys which kind of defeats the object. I have seen and sat in one and they are fabulous. Rich mans toy at the moment though.

A Tesla salesman told me that all motorway service stations now have fast charge points which will half charge the car in 20 mins (and it's free!) which will get you another 130-140 miles so not all bad. I'm seriously going to consider the Model 3 as although still a lot of money the overall TCO is still very attractive.

The theory is great. How many charge points though? At the moment you could turn up at a service station and the three charge points, there usually seem to be 2-3, could be taken. The people using them could be 30 minutes having a drink, something to eat etc. What do I do during that time? Sit in the car indicating for that space, ready to jump in when the car moves. Probably not space for that. All this time other electric car drivers may turn up. I then need to wait another 20 minutes or so whilst my car charges.

There needs to be a LOT of extra charge points if this is going to work. That or you have contactless charging which is built into the car park generally and so no one has to fight for the three spaces.

I have a feeling the free charging from Tesla is going to end. If not imminently then it must at some point. They can't keep giving out free power.

I should add, I would love a Tesla, great looking cars, fabulous concept. The infrastructure and practicalities just don't fit yet for me. Great for those who's journeys fit though.

I'm often travelling to Leeds Manchester, Devon, Bristol Norfolk Kent coast etc, 300 mile range and just stop at a supercharger which puts in up to 400 miles an hour whilst you have a coffee and a toilet break. Works so well.

I knew they were fast, but thats super wizzy, proper forum speed :) :)

Elon Musk has said, only a mug would 'buy' a tesla (i'm paraphrasing slightly). The tech changes that quickly, leasing is the only sensible option to keep up with the latest tech without being heavily out of pocket.

Yes, and my XC60 should do 64mpg. However, in the real world.....................I was interested to discover a real world distance achieved.

On a similar note I was having a look at a Passat hybrid. That is supposed to do 30 miles on electric only. Checking out a forum for this car I have not seen a single post where someone gets over 20 miles. Lies, all lies.

the guy i met on Tuesday drives one, says its pretty good for what it says, but when its cold and you have the heating on, the battery heaters, etc mileage drops by about 30%.

Ha we've just sold our first ever one after 58k miles in bought in 2014. Purchased for £68k sold for £48k. Best car in the world for depreciation at the moment. All helped by the sterling crash since brexit which had increased prices heavily

VW.....deja vu ;)

I could potentially be one of those who could take advantage of this, owning a 13yr Skoda Superb 1.9 diesel , which brim to brim gives me 45-55 mpg average. I don't see electric cars being the future, hyrdogen fuel cell is the future. Electric still creates pollution, and lets be honest no-one thinks the Tesla charging points will stay free. It's like a new drug baron seeling his **** for peanuts till everyone is hooked.
The infrastructure isn't and won't ever be up to standard to cope with the hoped for number of electric cars on the roads. If they can have charging point rage in California you will certainly get it over here.
Personally I am drifting towards a hybrid as my next car rather than petrol only.
