Hi,

For a while I have been hitting things like a right git (still enjoying it though.), the only club I have been happy with would be the 7 iron.

Anyway today , I played my course and used a 7 and 5 iron. No woods or driver. Went round in my best score ever at the club.

The course is PAR 71 and SSS 69, went round in 87 and left a few shots out there.(h/c is 24)

For some reason I was hitting most things straight (never done that before).

Just wondering if anyone else has tried this.

Cheers

I enjoy playing golf where you're only allowed three/five clubs - it puts a whole different perspective on your round.

I think it teaches creativity with your shots - gripping down/punches, etc.

I learnt to play with a half set which I think was a great education.

I totally agree with AW. I started with a half set and so if you were 150 yards out and didn't have the right club what could you do. Hit a osft landing fade with the next one up or hit or low runner with a lower club. Of course starting out these shots had a huge risk tarrif and never went according to plan but bit by bit you learn to adapt.

I love these 3 club competitions (I went through a phase of thinking they were a waste of time) as it gives you a chance to go out and have some fun again. I actually think carrying a full set all the time isn't necessarily always a good thing. Think I might look at a cheap pencil bag and try a half set again

I done the same thing earlier this year. There was a 3 club and a putter comp. I didn't want to play, I wanted to use all my clubs like in proper golf :D

My m8's twisted my arm and I played, grudgingly though.

Took a hybrid, 7i, PW and putter and equalled my best score (at the time) of 86 off 20 hcp.

With the hybrid off the tee pretty much hit every fairway, 7i upto the green, easy pitch on.

I just found I kept the ball safe and in play.

And to top it all I won the comp, by about 4 shots :)

Even now if my driver is giving me hassle I'll just use my hybrid for a few holes. Wouldn't have even considered it if i hadn't played this comp.

Sometimes I wonder how I'd score if I just took a 7i, PW and putter out.

Shot an 82 this week without driver etc. While still 11 over gross and outside my handicap, I certainly didnt have to hack out of trees anywhere near as often (read: one recovery shot all round)
Id recommend everyone tries it, just not during a monthly medal and from the back sticks like I did!!
