Rory McIlroy - great performance and chuffed to bits for him winning the USPGA and "gutting it out" as he said.

However, there have been a lot of rave reviews in the papers about his second shot to the par 5 10th that he subsequently made eagle on. I'm fairly sure he hit it out of the neck judging by the low left to right flight and I think Howard Clark from Sjy agreed as he thought it might be heading OOB.

What do others think - great shot or a little bit of luck (that we all need!) and he capitalised on????

I'm told he has come out and admitted it was not a clean hit and that was certainly my thoughts when watching it and his reaction to the shot.
Still had to do a lot more after that, including sinking the putt.

Bit of both really , you dont hit a 282 yard of the turf like that if you did not mean to , the bounce and run was a bit of luck and the fact that he made the putt to make it all count was another thing alltogether

He was the only player to reach the green in two, so it can't have been that much of a neck. When he hit it it looked well left, but I think the camera angle made the fairway look like it went further right than it did. Ball flight looked more like a driver off the deck though.

Agree with you , you cant neck a 282 yard shot and hope to get it there , no way

When your swing speed is as fast as Rorys you can.
It was out the neck and low on the face, Rorys flight with woods is high. That goes out like a bullet with no spin.

We've all seen the low on the face and out the neck flight for ourselves. Exactly what Rory hit

It was certainly lower on the face than he wanted and a bit necky but worked out perfectly

Not sure what the fuss is about, he isn't the first person ever to get a great result from a slight mishit and he certainly won't be the last.

If he flushed it, I don't think he would of got it any where near as he did. So he got extremely lucky with his mis hit, which it was.

I think he necked it......but that shot usually ends up where you are aiming...start left, cut right. I know, I play them all the time but I dont mean to. On the other hand, he could well have been playing a low cut.

Here's what Rory said about that shot

"The ball flight was probably around 30 feet lower than I intended and the line of the shot was probably around 15 yards left of where I intended, It was lucky, it really was.

"You need a little bit of luck in major championships to win and that was my lucky break. I didn't hit a very good shot there but it worked out well and I made eagle from it."
