Did Dustin Johnson blow it?

Did he throw it away... or did his caddy?

My advice would have been to hit the putt absolutely dead weight, if it goes in you're US Open champion, if not you've got one you can't miss. His caddy was WEAK in my opinion allowing him to hit it way too hard and have a missable return putt.... after seeing Jason Days putt roll 4ft by just moments before I can't believe he hit it that hard.

With the slope of the green and his downhill putt it looked almost impossible to hit it dead weight. Either way, he shouldn't be missing that putt back.

DJ should have had that tournament in the bag long before he even got to the 18th green but his putting all day was horrendous. He hardly holed anything outside 2 foot.

How on earth can you blame the caddy for him knocking it 4 foot past . How do you know his caddy didn't say hit it dead weight ?

He didnt blow it on the last hole though, go back over the 72 holes and see how many putts he missed. His play off the tee and irons kept him in the race....

Having stayed up to watch it I felt he blew it long before this but yeah, it was 12 feet and he messed up, dont think there's anyone else to blame.

Yup I three putted from 10ft on Saturday and couldn't lay the fault with anyone else

I think it is fair to say he did blow it but, and it is a massive but, none of us can really appreciate the intense pressure that DJ was under with that putt.

OK, it wasn't the longest putt to win a major but the greens were as we all know simply treacherous and it was easy to wander a relatively simple putt 3-4 ft past. Look at what Speith did on the 1st green; and for that matter countless others over the 4 days. Add into the equation the fact it was a putt to win a major and the pressure ramps up another level.

I know, if I'm honest, that I tend to get nervous on the 1st green in a major club comp and I find it difficult to feel the pace of putt(s) easily and that is after putting well on the practice putting green. God knows what they must be going through when it is to win a major.

Like most things in sport, some can handle the pressure and the big moments better than others.

He blew it long before 18 but to fail to at least push a play off was a shock. For Jordan to recover on 18 the way he did after that disaster on 17 took some balls and he deserved it for that alone. In fact looking at how he started I fully expected Jordan to fall away into the pack. The guy has an ability that is impossible not to admire.

I stayed up and watched it. I thought that he firstly should have made Jason Day mark his ball on 18 even though it was a good gesture by Day. The other surprising thing and also a mistake was that he took an extremely long time over the first putt which suggested uncertainty and eventually when he asked the caddy all the caddy said was it is a feel putt or something along those lines. He was not given a confident read by his caddie and not being sure of it himself either it led to the inevitable.

I'm surprised at the Caddie coming in for so much stick, if he made the putt how many people would be saying the caddie nailed it?

He choked. Pure and simple, he's done it before and who knows, maybe after this one he'll learn something about himself and be able to close it out next time. They're all human.

Except Speith. I have no idea what that thing is. I wouldn't want to play it though. :)

I also stayed up to watch it, think Dustin blew it before the 18th 3 putt, poor putting and some relatively easy iron shots cost him the win IMO .Cant think you can blame the caddie for that 3 putt,he should have made sure he got to a playoff at least.

But what a exiting back 9 to watch, starting with Rory's charge only halted on that missed putt on 14,fantastic back 9 from Louis O, but the player I thought was real unlucky was Brandon Grace just when he got to have a good chance of winning he had two putts that looked good only for the ball to bobble and throw it offline ,I know many players had that throughout the tournament but for that to happen at such a crucial stage must have been so frustrating .

But poor tee shot from Brandon going ob,surprised that Butch Harmon thought he couldn't play a provisional if he thought if ball might be ob.

So many mistakes on the last 4/5 holes made for compelling viewing but for a major those greens were simply not good enough, and if they had any wind that course would have been nearly unplayable.

Yes, Dustin blew it at the last putt but I think Ousthuizen blew it bigger with a scorecard that read 77, 66, 66, 67 - what a shame that first round was! See also McIlroy if he'd holed just half of the birdie opportunities he had on Friday and Saturday. The top of the leaderboard could have been very different - basically what I'm saying is that a number of people gave Spieth the chance to win, not just Johnson. But that's golf.

He had it in the bag with 9 holes to play and let it go. Then when he was handed a golden ticket on the last green, he threw it away again.

He blew it big time, and its simply ridiculous for anyone to even think about blaming the caddie.

Would like to see him redeem himself one day, hopefully not St Andrews, but seeing him win the USPGA at Whistling Straits would be fitting.

Blew it royally as he's done before and most likely will do again. Can't blame the caddie as he doesn't hold the club - DJ has to take responsibility for that.

Hard to feel sympathy for the millionaire with the 'extravagant' lifestyle but unfortunately single figure IQ.

Spieth made his own luck, but jeez what a slice of fortune for DJ to 3-stab from 12 ft to hand him the win. Made me think about the 2008 US Open where Tiger made that putt on the 72nd - no such luck for Rocco Mediate....fine margins!

Feel sorry for Dustin.Had a difficult year, but if Spieth had not double bogeed 17 he wouldn't have had a chance.Instead had a great opportunity and must be kicking himself. I think Spieth was a bit lucky and disappointed Branden Grace fell away, as he played superbly for four rounds, one loose drive cost him badly.

They all blew it, Spieth included, but one of them had to win. You can't say that some bottled it and another showed great courage, because they all screwed up one way or another.
You might even argue that making double on a par 3 with half an acre left of the hole is an even bigger mistake.

DJ is fast becoming one of my favourite players. I think it said a lot about him that he went to find Jordan to congratulate him, and 2 minutes later was smiling with his family.
