Evening all,

I got custom fit for some Titleist AP2 714 back end of last year but I'm a little but underwhelmed with them.

I was fitted with hard stepped s300 and I'm getting a high ballooning flight which is losing me lots of distance. I'm also struggling with the weight of the shaft as it feels very heavy and dead.

I would presume that a few forumers will use this shaft so was wondering if anyone had similar issues? Also if you weren't happy with the results and purchase after the fitting would you expect any help from the retailer?

Cant understand why these would balloon? They are low launch low spin shafts iirc and hard stepped also.....

I'm struggling to understand it myself. I normally carry about 160 with my 7 iron. This time of the year a bit less. Today I had a downhill and down wind 7 iron which I nutted and it carried 150. It just hung in the air. Normal would be hitting a 9 in the same situation (wind assisted).

No cheek intended, have you had a lesson??? Could be something as simple a slight swing fault due to different weighted shafts??

My bad shot is a pull / pull hook. I got new irons a few weeks ago same px 5.5 shafts installed albeit the flighted 95 model and i am hitting them with a slight push. Not had that shot for a few years. Think its just a transition stage for me.

I've played with AP2's for a while now with DGS300 and I cant say that I have a problem with a ballooning ball flight and distance loss.

The AP2 head is surprisingly heavy compared to say a Callaway XHP , I own a set of those as well with exactly the same shaft and the difference is quite noticeable. I tend to know more where the head is when swinging the XHP I can feel it, I dont get the same feedback from the AP2. Its not a problem as such as I can play well with the AP2 , its just different. The Callies are longer and the flight more penetrating but they do have stronger lofts than the AP2 I believe.

I do hit a high ball with the AP2 but the distance in neutral conditions is typically 140yd with 8I, 150yd with 7I, 160yd with 6I......give or take.

Maybe the issue is with the ball? Pro V1 wont let you down for distance so test with those.

I would always be 150 8 iron then toughly 10 yard gaps moving on. I'm a decent drop on that now which is frustrating. I wouldn't mind the extra club if everything else tightened up but I don't think I'm particularly anymore accurate.

I have contacted the retailer and they have suggested I go over and get fitted again and see what can be done. Hopefully something good will come out of it.

I've not had a lesson no. I am going back over for another fitting so something maybe pointed out during that.

They do seem hugely different from what I was using before in every way. Trying not to lose confidence with them but it's starting to set in.

Its not just a Winter thing is it? Distances can be down 10 yds down this time of year just due to the cold air.

assuming it was Titleist themselves that did the fitting so made up the new clubs. so no reason to think they would get anything wrong as would use uncut shafts put a 4i shaft in 3i etc. & cut to normal length.

you went from AP1's though with a reg shaft which is giving you your distance comparison to the new clubs, 'hard stepped' s300's, so that's kind of gone up to be between stiff & xstiff on a 'head' that does not quite give the help you were getting from the AP1's.

presumably it's a little ways colder now, than when you got your 'normal' distances with the AP1's regs.

so assuming there's nothing wrong with the shafts or the make up of the new AP2's, could be down to the fact that you are having to try to work the new clubs a deal harder than you've been used to so possible throwing the club head at impact which could be resulting in you adding loft through the strike, by the club head either arriving a little ways before the hands or pretty much at the exact same time - both of which would add loft through impact.

would be worthwhile if it's possible to book some time on GC2 HMT as you could then check the dynamic loft & AoA through impact & also see whether the strike has moved a little ways vertically up the face. both of which would have a big influence on launch angle & spin rate.

I went to a well thought of internet based retailer who also have a shop near me to get fitted and not Titleist directly. I am going back over tomorrow evening for another fitting. Hopefully it's just something swing related I'm just struggling to get used to them and they can point me in the right direction.

Service is generally fantastic and I was getting email responses back at 8.30pm last night offering to go back for another fitting. Can't ask for much more. Just hope there is a nice simple solution!

I would suggest trying the Project X shafts and seeing how you get on with them.

I had the S300 shafts in previous titleist models and did find they would balloon/spin too much however I also have the 714 ap2 but with PX 6.0 and the ball flight is very stable.

I'll see if I can have a try with one tomorrow. Thought I was a bit of an anomaly there as most others seem to rate the DG highly.

I'd be tempted to get them to make up the same club spec that they made up during your fitting (which would obviously be the same as your actual club), you can then do a side by side comparison to your own club.

... would be quicker than doing a complete custom fit and might show up something fast for you.
