Evening all.

I am wondering if any of you play your golf in Devon? I am close to getting out and playing on the course. I live 4 miles away from a 9 hole course, which also has a floodlit range - I suspect I will start off there. However, I had my lessons at a differing course a bit further away. That course seems very pleasant, and the pro is very good there - I suspect I'd end up playing there once I have a bit more experience (no range there only a couple of nets I believe). Does anyone in the area have any suggestions for courses than might be suitable for new players?

Thanks,
Jason.

Don't know if I can help much as it's years since I've played golf in Devon. Exeter has a beautiful parkland course. Sidmouth isn't very good (IMHO). Budleigh Salterton is supposed to be VERY good. Also some good courses in West Dorset. E.g. Lyme Regis.
Good golfing

Hi,

The other month I spent 3 days at the Ashbury Hotel near Okehampton. I am a Novice Golfer and found the courses spot on . I went with 3 other Golfers whose H/C ranged from 9 to 14, I played off 24 . All of us really enjoyed the courses.

Cheers

Dartmouth, or the one between Newton Abott and Bovey Tracey.

Not played them, but know of them as my in-laws are from that area.

A couple of years ago I tried to get a round for 6 friends of mine whilst at a yacht regatta in Torquay. No club would take our money. We all had our own kit, but no club / course was interested. We ended up trying Caymen golf near Brixton way.

Guess that I'm spolit for choice around here. (Southampton area).

Bovey Castle is silly money, and the last 4 holes are not worth bothering with. Cracking front nine though. Played it loads of times.

Budleigh Salterton is very nice, but was a bit exclusive when I last played there (a long time ago when golf was a bit more snobby).

Ashbury Manor is ok, but not exactly challenging.

Depends where in Devon you are based.

I'm hazarding a guess you live near Bovey Tracey-their little 9 hole is a good starter and the pro is very good and has good prices.
Let me know which part of Devon you are situated i.e N/S/E/W and i'll give info on courses.

Just on Bovey Castle-has the best front nine I have played, abd they are actually looking for members-not silly money either, but not my cup of tea as there's zero social side to the Golf section.

Thanks all for the replies.

I am in the Newton Abbot area. Thus, my closest one is Hele Park ( 9 holes, floodlit covered ranger, something like £12 for 9 holes which is ideal to start off with)

I have been learning at Teign Valley however (11 miles away down some lanes) but the pro is a good chap and the atmosphere appeals to me.

Will forget bovey castle, dont have a fat wallet at the mo!

Thanks,
Jason.

Not sure, but I've heard that it is very 'exclusive', and fairly costly. I actually pass it on the way home from Teign.

Jason,

I've heard the pro at Hele is excellent for lessons also.

Hapless-Stover is a great course, really stunning course to play and look at BUT they have real problems when it rains, the course can be a write off six months of the year sometimes.

I'd certainly stick to my current pro when the time for additional lessons comes along. He understands my game very well, and we get along well.

Do you play much in the area then Krokodil?

Jason-I'm not too far from you, though Hele is a course I've not played yet.
Have you played the little 9 hole in Bovey Tracy? Its not a bad lay out and for such a new course it's coming along not too bad.
I play up the road at Teignmouth which is a course I enjoy greatly.

Hapless-by all means, just shout when you're down.

I haven't played a full proper round yet - I have only recently finished my series of lessons to start me off which went very well. I am getting new clubs tomorrow, so I am going to spend a bit of time getting used to them before I jump out on the course, but I am very eager, almost itching! I'd try some 9 holes first, so Hele Park. That Bovey course looks handy too, might be worth giving that a shout.
