For 2 years I have been trying my best to get better at this game, for a short period last year I thought I had cracked it with at 99 and a 94. However since then I have not even come close to breaking 100. I thought it may be that my driver was costing me shots as I am expert at finding the rubbish off the tee, so I have dropped that from the bag, now take a 5w and find the fairway but have the lost the ability to hit anything like a respectable approach shot. I can't seem to string 2 good shots together on a hole, I have tried everything from trying attacking golf, to trying to play 5 golf, and I still fail. I play to have banter with my mates, but I want to score OK as well it's not fun losing every week.

I am 23 handicapper I appreciate that I am not a world beater, but surely I should be able to find some consistency? My scorecards are laughable, anything from 3's to 12's.

Anyone want to buy some JPX EZs just about ready to give up :(

twice a week at the range and short game area, about all I can manage. If I pick a target at the range I can generally get within 15ft of it (which I am happy with). But come to a round it's a different matter.

Can you hit any iron at all off of a grass fairway reasonably consistently? PW, 9i, 8i for example?

If you can do it on the range and not on the course it could be a mental block, try and approach the round with a more positive outlook and embrace the challenge of the round. If that doesn't work some lessons or a fitting session for a driver to shorten the course a little. Best of luck! Todd

Many who struggle with inconsistency try to hit the ball to hard.

-Check your basic set up, slow your swing down and then get a blank score card and plot your way around the course, working out how you can get around using your go to clubs i.e. 420 yd par 4 stroke index 7- Hybrid off the tee 180 yds, 7 iron 140 yds, lazy PW 100 yds which will leave you 2 shots for par against your handicap.

If you plan it and break it down you can lose quite a few shots.

Have you had any lessons?

Stop trying so hard to break 100, it's just a number, much like any other. Take all the pressure off, stop counting, and bash it round. You'll soon realise that it's not that big a deal, and you'll probably be way under it without even knowing.

No need to despair buddy - that's golf. No rhyme or reason to it at times. Last weekend off 10 I managed to shoot a 97 (25 over) on Saturday - including a 12 and a bakers dozen of Lucy Lockets - and was last in the comp. Next day I shot a 79 (7 over including a triple) and won my match.

It was so bad on Saturday (53 out) that as I hacked about in the heather on our 9th I was for packing up and walking in - but I didn't - knowing that it would pass. And it did. So shot 44 back 9 (not good but better) and Sunday was a new day and a new round of golf.

And to break 100 - just try playing to 6s. That's what I did.

6s is 108 - but you know you can easy get a 6 on every hole - so just go for that - make 6 your par on every hole and in your head score to 6s.

So if on a par 3 you get a 3 - try thinking 3 under par. Next hole is a par 4 and you get a 5 that's you 1 under for that hole and now 4 under for the two holes. It makes you feel good when you are 'under' in golf. That's how I broke 100 - and scoring to 5s how I broke 90.

I was very publicly tasked with breaking 100. It was no coincidence that for the period my game was under scrutiny my scores did not improve but as soon as the pressure was off my scores fell below that magic number (not that I don't still shoot the odd Cricket score).

Cheers,

Paul

was it Viruocity who wrote the how to break 100 instructions? i think that was a very well thought out idea and could be useful...

Happens to us all, no matter how good you get. Off 12 I shot 75 a few years back but have only broke 80 once since, such is golf!

It sounds to me like yours is more of a mental or course management block, so as the others have recommended take the pressure off a bit by changing the goalposts a bit, aiming for 6s on every hole is a great idea.

If you struggle even on your own out on the course with nothing on the line then perhaps evaluate your course management, things like aiming for the widest part of the fairway and knowing where not to miss the green will help you no end.
