In true buffoon style, I got rid of my trusty non-rusty TaylorMade V Steel 5W not so long ago, replacing it with the Ping G20. Being a Ping fan-boy, I thought “a-ha!”, (like the Partridge) this will be a great decision. Sadly, it was not.

Whilst the G20 is undoubtedly a solid club, it’s not for me. Being a high handicapper I should embrace big headed fairway woods, but truth be told, I do not. At all. With the G20 I pull everything left, strike it sweet, but to the left, to the left, just like Beyoncé. (My god I apologise for that pun, that is awful).

I loved the V Steel, hot off the face, great launch, superb from fairway, rough and from out under the trees (often). I miss it and its tiny little head. I want it back.

Trying to acquire the 2006 model with the right shaft is nigh on impossible. I’m sad. (I even emailed the buyer of my original 5W, begging forgiveness and an offer to buy it back – he pitied me and politely declined – sensible chap).

So, bucking the current trend, I want a SMALL headed 5W, like the V Steel. Couldn’t give a monkeys if its and old model, just want one that’s solid to hit from fairway and light rough. I’ve shortlisted a couple, an old Cleveland Launcher, Titleist 906F4 etc, but can anyone recommend a model that is truly BELTING??

Love always,

Love always,

Titleist 906 fairways (f2 if you prefer a deeper face) are absolutely superb.

The new Cleveland Classic XL actually remind me of the 906f2, just bought a 5w as they are dirt cheap at the moment and its a very nice club.

V-Steel was a relatively Large-headed FW.

Sonartec GS Tour or NP-99 are great FWs in old style. As CMAC posted Steelhead (Plus) are really good too and Nike T60. Also the TM200 (TM300 not as good imo).

Warning! My recommendations are based on the performance of their 3-Woods. The 5W might not be as outstanding!

R580 5Wds have a great reputation! As does the R5 Dual. Not sure whether they can be termed small-headed though.

Or Hunt the V-Steel 5W!

I could never hit my G20 3 and 5 woods so bought a bargain pair of Callaway Big Bertha Fusion with Aldila NVS 55R shafts and I love them. The very very worst 3 wood I've hit with the Callaway still knocks spots of the very very best I ever hit with the Pings. They have a small head (relatively) with a deep face.

Nike vr pro ltd edition is worth a look

There is a vsteel 5w in golfbidder... Spendy though, at £49 for an old secondhand club

Did a bit more digging on the G20 vs V-Steel.

G20 is a Shallow faced club. V-Steel is more towards the Deep-Faced design. That could be something to do with why you don't get on with the G20.

So I'd advise looking for a Mid or Deep faced head. Those Sonartecs are Deep, or at least Mid/Deep. The SS3/3.5 is Deep, the SS1/1.5 is shallow.

I had similar issues with the R7 FW and the same applies to Drivers - I prefer Deep Faced as my miss is High/Low rather than Left/Right.

They are the daddies! Cheap as chips definitely consider one of you had a v steel

I might be able to get hold of a V steel 5 wood for you. Only has the stock stiff flex shaft in it. Will ask my mate who no longer uses it to bring it down to me this weekend.

Will take a look at the Nike fella, never considered it before. That V steel has a steel shaft unfortunately, already spied it!

Cheers Cam, but looking for the R flex. The one that was going so sell at Gainsborough! Appreciate the offer though.

Cheers Foxy, i'll check out the Sonartecs. Must admit, never heard of them before?
