Looking for a 4 ball knock this coming Saturday in Derbyshire

Friends are staying in Hartington - 10miles north of Ashbourne - 10miles east of Leek. I'm in Chesterfield. Matlock is my only idea as I've played there before and its fine. Other ideas welcome

Cheers

Some very nice courses in Derbyshire.

Nearer the Derby the best courses are Kedleston (no 1 in the county), Chevin, Breadsall, Horsley, Mickleover

North of the county you have Matlock, Chesterfield, Cavendish, Buxton & High Peak, Ashbourne

The best courses in the county are Kedleston, Cavendish, Horsley, Chesterfield and Matlock.

All my own opinion of course

Thanks for that - very useful. Matlock is easiest for us as it's mid-way between me and the rest. But they want to play saturday late morning - I doubt we'll get on a private course at that time in any case.

Having now spoken to the guy organising it sounds like none of the other guys are particularly regular or serious. But he was phoning around today so I'll see what he's come up with. I will myself though check out your recommendations as I'm up in Chesterfield a fair bit.

Got a 4BBB booked for Bakewell (9 hole). They'll give us a midday slot. Suits me just fine as Bakewell is close to MiLs - and we're thinking of moving to Bakewell area ourselves in the coming few years - so good to get a feel of the track as a stop gap until I join an 18holer. And it's above the town so the views will be grand.

Besides I don't think the guys I'm playing with are 'serious' golfers so probably best we're playing a 9hole rather than 18hole - as the guy organising said - 9hole courses have advantage for visitors in that you have another go at a hole when you mess it up first time.

Food was always good in club friendlies, not played for a while but not heard of it changing.
short course with sss well below par, greens tended to putt well enough. Some elevation changes and doglegs.
edit stanedge is another 9 holer you coyld probably get on too.

:) Stanedge is up the hill behind my MiLs village - often go for walks up there. Only played it once though - but now that you mention it I must get back there. Might even have a go on Sunday if weather is OK as I'll have my clubs with me. Yet to play Walton (Chesterfield) itself - though I've played Tapton a few times. And even better - with my Surrey County Card I can get a Saturday afternoon knock for £25. What's not to like

Bakewell's pleasant, although you could probably do with one leg longer than the other (!) as it's on the side of quite a steep hill. Tees are different for front and back nines, so it doesn't feel like you're playing the same course twice.
Can also recommend Chesterfield (Walton) or even Tapton, but they were still on mats and a couple of temps last week.

Thoroughly enjoyed my 18holes at Bakewell. Mind you it was a cracking day - not sure playing it in a gale and lashing rain :)

As far as some elevation changes - yes there were some but some were huge - and a few blind holes and hidden greens. The alternate tees also changed the look and feel of most of the holes second time around - so that's good. Fun course. Tough first time out. I could probably suss it out fairly and play to my handicap fairly easily but very enjoyable.

As only 20mins from my MiL might actually look into country membership. Mind you Stanedge is only 10mins from her - but think I preferred Bakewell

Hope u enjoyed it, we had to play the last in Jacket and tie with non golf shoes after our meal for a nearest the pin after our matches. Hard bit was walking up there on dewy grass in dress shoes.

i've yet to play Stanedge, know 2 or 3 members so need to get round to it.
Glossop and new mills r the others not played un derbyshire.

Walton is ok subtle breaks on greens, back 11 lot greener than 1st 7. 2 or 3 strong holes.

Thanks for the tips.

Laughing to myself imagining a bunch of suited, booted and lubricated golfers heading up the slope to the last tee :)

Closest was 2 foot via the roof (not me) in subsequent years i learnt my lesson and walked up the path via 8 / 17.

Edit also took care about where i parked.

Played Ashbourne today and it was a doozy of a course. Extremely friendly welcome, not very busy when we teed off at 11am, it was in beautiful condition and the greens were some of the best I've played on in a long time.

Plus you had to think on some of the holes and it wasn't just a whack with a driver then short iron as a lot are. Highly recommended if you are in the area. Plus I got it for 20 quid on one of the discounted tee times sites. A definite hidden gem if I ever saw one.

Thanks for that HK - might take my bats with me next time I visit the MiL and give it a go. £20 for a knock presses all the right buttons for me if going to have to play on my tod into bargain.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'll be up there on Friday for a charity day. Last time I played the greens were in good nick, a tad slow though, how were they for speed when you played?

Any particular standout holes, 11 & 12 are tough & often seen as marmite holes, I like the last 4 personally?

I suppose you could call them a bit slow, but both me and my mate commented how true they were. And I kind of prefer greens to be a little on the slow side so I can have a rattle at the hole without the fear of going twice as far past the hole if I miss. I got the speed quickly enough and I can't remember any 3 puts, which the way I put is the sign of good greens.

As it was my first time I can't quite remember which holes were which, but I kind of enjoyed them all to be honest. I did like the one where you have to carry about 240 downhill to clear the lake, or you lay up and leave yourself a long second shot. Made you think. Also enjoyed the par 5s where the green was a bit hidden behind mounds, so you had to think about where you hit your second shot instead of just blasting it as close to the hole as possible.

You are a contrary fellow aren't you. Most people, member included, hate that hole and want it changing. Quite a few of the ladies struggle to get over the pond and so pick up if it's stableford and don't even bother playing the hole.

The par 5, is that the 17th, short par 5 which turns left at the end?

15 is my favourite, a really good risk and reward hole.

Ashbourne calls itself the friendliest club, and it could well be accurate. Glad you enjoyed it.

So why don't the ladies lay up (like I actually did :o)? Some may then be able to get on the green on the 2nd shot, but even if they get on for 3, 2 puts is a point if they do not get any strokes, and is 2 points if they do get a shot. Made a change from just automatically blatting a driver as you do on a lot of holes.

Yes that was one par 5 that turns left, and there's one earlier that turn right with a hidden green from where you hit your second, which was interesting as we'd never played the course before.
