In the process of completely re-decorating the house. So far done the kitchen, dining room, and hall. Don't mind too much, but the smell of the paint gives me rotten headaches.:(

U want to try moving to a new house that has not been decorated since 1992.. Hallway and downstairs loo almost complete.. Just got to fit the skirting boards and finish plumbing the sink.. Then I have to move on. Apparently it's one of the kids bedrooms next..

We moved into our current house in 1986. Previous owners were two sisters in their 80's. No heating, no kitchen apart from a free standing stove, round pin electrics. Last decorated in about 1939, judging by the lead paint every where.

Have you tried using the low odour paints such as Dulux eggshell quick drying paint. It doesn't yellow, has a low sheen finish and easy water clean up.
Gloss paint is so old hat - the above is the way forward!

Gloss is not so much of a problem. It is the emulsion which makes me feel sick, and gives me a headache. Trouble is it is so cold at the moment, I can't have the windows open for too long.

I always use Crown white gloss. Dulux gloss seems to have a yellow tint. Solved the problem of gloss going yellow with age, by stripping back all the old lead paint.

Old lead paint, blimey, how old is your house?
Gloss paint always yellows after time, even with a decent undercoat. :(

1850's, so not too old.;)

Ours used to go yellow, but after stripping the pine doors they remained nice and white. Trouble is I didn't strip the achitrave around the doors and they have gone yellow.:(

Decorating is fun, been doing it for over 35 yrs now.
If you don't want "smelly paint" then go for a water based system, no smell and non yellowing ( it's the oil that's goes off over time ) but for anyone looking to paint, the best advice I can give is stay away from Dulux/crown (both the same company) much better paint out there, also if you buy paint make sure it's trade paint, remember, if it doesn't say trade on the tin then it's not.
Don't be fooled into thinking all paints are the same, they are not.
If anyone needs any advice I would be happy to advise.

I absolutely detest decorating & haven't done any since I semi retired. The way I look at it I'd rather go out & work to earn the money to pay a decorator to do the job. My hourly rate is higher than his & I can enjoy myself instead of doing a job I hate & aren't very good at. Golf, decorating &, for that matter, gardening don't mix.

The trick, I find, is to wait a couple of weeks for it to dry thoroughly and then give it a quick going over with a good, thin car wax. It's easier to clean too!
The same goes for uPVC windows and doors .............................. oh, and plastic patio furniture if anybody still uses that.

Do you have any of that energy saving paint left? Wouldn't mind reducing my electric bill 😉

headaches, I was up at 1.00 o'clock with a stonker, my neck was thrashing with rolling the ceilings.

Missis T woke up this morning and said her he'd is going to explode.

did not think that it could of been the paint.

After the building works, we will need to start looking into this. The Mrs wants Farrow & Ball...
What is the deal with F&B paint? I havent seen it yet, but they look lovely in glossy mags. Moosively expensive..

What is best advice on F&B knock offs? Ours is not a period property - just a 60s standard build that is now showing its age. Someone mentioned Johnstones paints

I'm not particularly doubting what you say Dellboy but I've been using Dulux paint for years and never had problems.

Does that go for Dulux Trade as well, and why stay away?

The paints I always avoid - any make - are the non drip (the ones you don't stir) and one coat wonders!
A rub down with sandpaper, a decent undercoat, a quick flick over with "used" sandpaper, then a top coat of choice - always produces excellent results.
