HI guys,

Right I have now done some extensive research of what my next set of irons should be. Looking to upgrade from my current Nike Slingshots 2010 version once I hit 18 handicap.

I have currently looked into 4 sets which have really caught my eye and I can't seem to get my head around which one would be best! Once I have made the choice, I will seriously be considering getting them custom fit to my game.....The choices are (drum roll please..........)

Titleist AP1's
Taylor Made RocketBladez
Callaway X-Hot
Nike VR Pro Combos

Would appreciate your views and feedback from any of you who currently use any of the above to TRY and make me decision a little bit easier!

Its a personal thing.. The cosmetics of a club is down to personal taste and all clubs will be different depending on individual ability. I.e most high handicappers wont feel confident in hitting a bladed club and some might hit a deep cavity longer. I would take all sets youre interested in into a swing centre or decent shop and try them all before buying. Then select which ones are right for your swing combined with the ones you like the look of at address ( this will add to your confidence) and then have them custom fitted for you. Job done.

I tried the Ap 1s, Mizuno MP63's, Ping i20's and the Rocket Bladz

The Rockets were the longest but a bit wayward, the Ap's were nice but hard to find a sweet spot, the Mizzies the sexiest but less forgiving and shorter and the Pings the most accurate and only a few yards behind the Bladz. I went for the Pings. :) Also with Ping you have your own unique reg number so if you loose/break the club they simply track you on the data base and remake one for you in the same set up. I.e for me 1 degree upright blue dot.

It takes a few weeks to get used to new custom made clubs but well worth it. IMO>

As a beginner using these very irons I can fully agree with this, they are "game improvement" irons but are meant to be for better players, but my when you catch one well they feel great and the ball just flies!

That said I hit my buddy's Ping G2's way better :p

IN answer to your question "what would you go for?" I would go for the the nike pro combos from that selection, no question.
That doesn't mean you should... They will be quite the departure from your nike slingshots.

I love the Nike VR pro combos but I'm not sure i would be consistent enough for them. I have tried them and didn't do to bad but a mis hit is not going to get you anywhere. Have a look at one in the shop it will look half the size of what your using now.

I might be biased, plus I got upgrade shafts in mine, but my rbladeZ are awesome. Miss hits go 90% of what you wanted, so forgiving. Yes they have strong lofts, but a lot of Gi irons do now.

Look great, sound great, play great. I would be as chuffed with them if I had paid full price too! They at mega!
