HID is insisting that we do something golf for big birthday this year. Three of us hit it at the same time and 2 of us are golfers. So thinking of a golf trip in December during the school hols (say Dec 20-New Year). I guess it rules out most of UK and Northern Europe.

I am assuming Florida will still be an option (or is it). Any other within the 8-10 hr flying where we can do something for golfers and non-golfers?

Bermuda - great golf courses, wonderful climate and it is a British overseas territory. I've been lucky enough to visit there on 3 occasions and played golf each time, Port Royal being possibly the best public course in the world. Tons to do when not golfing and the capital Hamilton is charming. December temperature should average near 20c and there are direct flights from the UK.

I'm always going to sell South Africa to you. From London the direct flight time is 10h40 BUT there is only 2 hours time difference and the flights are overnight. Leave cold and wet England at 9pm and arrive in warm and mostly sunny South Africa at 8am the next morning. Plenty of superb coy purses to play and you can couple this with a safari or beach holiday.

HID has a lot of Saffie colleagues and she is also looking at going out there. My big concern on SA is safety - they havent got the best track record have they..

Florida is a reasonable option, although by no means guaranteed. December is in the hurricane season. California is also a decent bet, somewhere around the San Diego area, or around Palm Springs. If you were prepared to fly a bit further, Cabo in Baja California is a great place for high quality golf and sea fishing. Hawaii would also be great at that time of year, but is another 5 to 6 hours from the west coast of the US.

Other parts of the Caribbean could work, Barbados tends to miss most of the hurricanes coming in towards Florida and has some very good golf. Peak season, though.

Dubai is also a possibility. Lots of good golf, nice hotels and restaurants although a bit sterile and not for bacon lovers.

I have never been to Mauritius, but it looks to have some pretty good resorts and courses.

I went to Cape Town/Garden Route and NEVER felt threatened, people were very friendly and helpful.

Seems most of the best destinations have been covered with Florida, Dubai and SA. Other possibles are north Africa (Morocco?) and Mexico which has some great courses.

Same for me. I drove, by myself to 3 courses in and around Cape Town and 1 a good hour's drive away and never felt unsafe. We walked a little around Cape Town too, and all was fine. Staying at Camps Bay is possibly the safest area, I believe.
