debating playing the medal with no woods, longest club = 3i/21 deg hybrid

I played a 3 club comp with no woods or even a hybrid. Put alot of strain on pured irons off the tee. Never again.
Might be worth dropping the driver, but keep the 4 wood in the bag.

Will make it the course play awfully long with the rain we have had, but if your not confident with the woods then give it a go.

I'd play in a comp without my driver, I'd use 5 wood off the tee, but it would put a big strain on my long irons.

off 28 you could use your shots wisely, play par 4's as 5's etc.

What is your goal, to win or be cut ?

You could probably manage a cut with a low risk strategy but for a win you may have to take some risks

Im the same handicap as you gibbo and today after the 2nd tee I didnt use a driver or 3 wood. Took my 3 hybrid for every par 4/5 tee shot and I scored better. Every shot off the tee straight up the middle around 180-195yards and put no pressure on me for the second shot. Give it a try you have nothing to lose.

As has been said above if you want cut try to play to level 5's. If you do that then you will get a sizeable cut AND most likely win. Off 28 there is no need to be too aggressive by smashing driver then hoping to hit wedge in, take the hybrid and play an 8 or whatever in.

I wouldn't do it, 28 or not. I think it has defeatist tomes and wouldn't put me in a particularly positive frame of mind but perhaps its just me. I think you can still play level 5 golf with the driver or a 3 wood in the bag

In fairness if you are playing off 28 and your drives are messing up your game, then losing a bit of length of fthe tee shouldnt matter too much, better 180 on the fairway than over 200 in thew long stuff.

has anyone tried this? off 28 I have sod all to lose hence toying with the idea

Hold the phone....there's a geezer at mine who tees off with a 4 iron all day long. He doesn't make a lot of pars on long holes, then again, nor do I. He's off 16 and makes me look like an amateur at course management.

Try it, the only downside is you might get a little bored........

Only he and me play our 200yd par 3 over TWO lakes with 9 iron + wedge. :(

A hybrid is around 4" shorter than a driver, that makes your penalty drops almost a foot shorter :)

Now on a serious note, I got to ten using a 3w as the longest club in my bag so don't see not using a driver as a bad issue. If you can hit your hybrid 180-200 straight then it's a no brainier. You will still hit gir on the par 5's, the only strain will be long par 4's. Working on a numbers game you will have around 12 par 4's on your course, most of them are effectively two shot holes.

Decent course management would see a good hybrid to 200 ish, if it's a long hole same again with a chip and 2 putts for a bogey. It's going to be down to course management

My friend had a playing lesson with a pro who took a 7 iron, 54 degree wedge and putter with him for the 9 holes. The pro's philosopy was that every hole was parable using these 3 clubs and demonstrated it during the lesson by going just a few shots over.

I wouldn't do this, when i took the driver out of the bag it had the reverse effect and fairways hit decreased. I found i was trying to smash my 3 wood to have a decent yardage in. I would put the driver in and swing shorter and smoother, much easier to control than smashing a hybrid and would go further

Keep the Driver in.

If only to use it for measuring club lengths!

Seriously Gibbo, I'd do it. As you say, what have you got to lose?
Defeatist it may be, but if you get round in a reasonable score then the confidence boost has to be worth it.
Long drives are only any use on long par 4's and par 5's if you're in with a chance of making it in 2.
A 400 yard par 4 = 2 x hybrids 180-190 yards, a chip and 2 putts.
It's not going to affect your par 3's and par 5's can be reached with 2 hybrids and an iron.
Aim for bogey and you'll break 90.
Job's a good-un.
Also the hybrid off the tee - hit off line and it won't get you as far into the clag as a driver would.
