Hi Everyone.

I'm Brian from Cheltenham. I've been lurking here for quite a few months, but now it's time to introduce myself.

I've been playing on and off for years but never to a high standard (a handicap of about 24 is fair at the moment). I only play on the course about once per month, but I do go to the range fairly often so that I don't embarrass myself too much when I do play. I'm not a member of anywhere at the moment, but am seriously considering joining Puckrup Hall in Tewkesbury. I think there's a decent cat 3 player in me but I really need to play much much more to find him.

Cheers Everybody

Bri

Welcome Brian.

Only played Puckrup Hall once over 20 years ago. Bought three new balls in the pro-shop. Off the first tee I sliced the first in the direction of the car park, tried again and hooked it into a lake and the third went straight but into a stream as the hole was a dog leg. Half way up the first and had lost my three new balls :(.

Welcome along. Never ever worry about embarrassing yourself on the course. I've been playing years and amassed a massive 21 points on Sunday to finish stone wall last. Got some banter after but all forgotten time I left the clubhouse

hello and welcome along to the madhouse, would Brickhampton not be an easy location to get to than Puckrup from Cheltenham?

I'm actually just north of Cheltenham, but no-one knows where Bishop's Cleeve is (unless they're a local). The courses I was considering are Brickhampton, Puckrup and Tewkesbury Park. They're all roughly the same distance away from me, give or take a couple of miles. I don't know many people at the local courses - most of my golf buddies play in the Forest of Dean or down in Bristol.

I quite like the course at Brickie; it's maturing quite nicely, and the driving range and extra 9 hole course are good selling points. And it's flat as a pancake. On the down side, it does suffer a bit with drainage.

Used to be a member at Tewkesbury Park about 8 years ago. Like the course, although I think some of the greens are annoyingly small. There's a couple of decent practice areas too. The main down side for me appears to be their calendar - not enough Stablefords for my liking, and can't see any signs of a rollup/swindle. And there's no way the SSS off yellow tees should be 3 shots under par!

I've enjoyed Puckrup when I've played it. No driving range, but does have practice chipping greens and bunkers. Like Tewkesbury Park, it's a hotel course so visitors and societies have to be expected. On the plus side, there is a swindle every Saturday, and at least one QC a week for most of the year.

Decisions, decisions.

Its what i call a happy problem re choosing of the course. 👍😁

Welcome Brian. I think it's probably easy to discount a course on the basis that you find it difficult to buffer at the moment, but if you play as rarely as you do you may find yourself relishing a bit more of a challenge once you get into it. Medal golf isn't actually any different to Stableford! If you take a 10 on a hole okay you're probably not in contention for the medal, but for handicap purposes it's only a net double bogey (i.e. no points). Your h/c will be based on stableford points regardless of the format if its strokeplay so don't let that put you off, pick the best course/social combination, the lads and the track will keep you coming back. If you have one and not the other, it becomes easier to stay in bed on a Saturday morning...

Happy golfing!

ah if your in Cleeve then can see why you favour Puckrup. good luck choosing you may even get a couple of "trial" rounds FOC if you email club secs.

ps. born in chelt started out at Cleeve Cloud and was a member at Lilley Brook and Brickhampton in days gone by.
