I would like them to be integrated, say, into the rear view mirror so they are unobtrusive.
There's already too much crap on people's windscreens with another stick-on......
Also, as I change my car frequently, it's a pain having a dashcam uninstalled then reinstalled in the new car so wires aren't dangling all over the place.
Just remember, they can be used to prove that you've been a pillock just as well as the other guy.....
Can't see it becoming law but I can see it being fitted to new cars.

My question would be... Why should they be fitted?

If it's for big brother purposes... Then, no thank you...

The evidence they provide is invaluable .......

If someone hits you, you can prove it.
If you see a hit and run you can prove it.
If there is a crash on a road and several have filmed it, there's no need to close the road for days.
If someone jumps on your bonnet and claims, you can prove it.
If you were doing the speed limit, you can prove it.

You insert a memory card into a slot in the camera and that card holds all the footage. There's no big brother involved at all.

You wouldn't have to if all cars had them, you'd just swap the memory card

Wouldn't that improve peoples driving?

Exactly!

Short term - possibly.
The vast majority of bad driving results in near-misses at worst.
Unless a law is broken it's not going to stop people driving like idiots.
And would the Police be able to cope with the vast increase in work as a result..?

As the cam records their speed would that not encourage them to drive slower?

Would it not help decrease the police work Ian . Less time investigating stuff most if which is lies bn told to them ?

I can see people sending the police footage from their dash cam in the belief that a law has been broken.
If something's sent in with an accusation, I suspect the police will be obliged to review it.
Probably in excess of 90% will not result in any action.
That's going to take time..

I’ve seen loads of dashcam footage taken by guys driving like lunatics. Dash cams seem to encourage it. If it came to a choice I’d be more inclined to ban them than mandate them.

Unless they are involved in a crash, nobody else will see the speed.
They already have a Speedo, they know the limit, there are speed cameras....
This isn't going to make a difference in that front.

Having already had one fitted in my van, it was invaluable when a Range Rover reversed back into my 3 week on van. The evidence I was stationary made him pay up without question.
If they become standard fit, it's only a very short matter of time that you own "defence" will be used against you. Sadly I feel people are all to quick to post what they view as bad driving on the internet, only giving a one sided account and no context of the situation.
Should manufactureres fit descreet ones as standard, with conditions surrounding their use it might not be a bad idea.

But if the boy racers know that every car is fitted with a dashcam then every car around them will be a potential speed camera

I Believe some insurance companies are insisting new drivers use them as a condition of getting cover... Only a matter of time before they get around to insisting all drivers use them...

Ok, but how is that data going to get to the end point of a speeding conviction..?
It's not just the Boy Racers who speed, by the way..it's virtually everyone.
And a dash cam can't measure someone else's speed can it.?
And how accurate are they in tracking your speed..?
I don't know....

The manufacturers already have the technology for speed control of your car via GPS, but havent taken it further simply as the vast majority wouldn't buy into the "best for you" scenario.
How many here would buy a car that limited your speed to the signed limits regardless of situation? Probably none I bet. I know I wouldn't.
