Have this problem every year and whilst there is very little sub soul with bricks underneath the turf it seem to be getting worse.

Apart from relaying the lawn any suggestions please

Get to a wilko's or b&q and buy some weedkiller but make sure that you don't buy the grasskiller stuff!! Has to be fine to use on grass.

Follow instructions on back to get mixture into a sprayer (cheap spray gun will do) and then go round and spray each dandelion. This should start to kill them off but i'd recommend repeating this process 3/4 times to make sure they really get killed off down to the roots.

The current wet weather isn't helping!

Cut your grass half as short and twice as often.
If your mower has height adjustment, raise it up by at least a couple of notches from where it is. This may go a long way to solving the underlying problem.
Grass, like any other plant, depends on sunlight to photosynthesise and grow healthy.
If you cut your grass too short, you restrict the surface area available to soak up the sun and the grass is unable to compete against other plants which have leaves which are broad and lay below the level at which the mower will cut them e.g. dandelions, daisies or plantain.
If you leave more leaf on each blade then, over time, the grass will naturally crowd out the low lying, broad leaved weeds. Once this thick sward of lawn is established then you can gradually cut it shorter and shorter if you wish as long as you maintain it in the zone where it is able to outcompete the weeds.

Also, giving nature a hand by employing a bit of chemical warfare will certainly speed up the process as per previous posts

These posts just confirm what an Senior Pro keeps saying:

The Evergreen 4 in 1 stuff is really good, can get it for about £8 for a box (2/2.5kg i think). I do mine twice a year with it, not a weed in site.

Using an old chisel or long bladed screwdriver, insert deep into soil close to the plant alongside the deep tap root, apply a slight leverage and hey presto you pull out the dandelion with most of the root.

Far quicker and probably more effective than painting the leaves with weed killer and you won't run the risk of killing the adjacent grass.

Then, as suggested, when you cut the grass don't scalp it. Don't think of green or fairway length. Think 1st cut. Your lawn will thank you for it.

while were on lawns mine has lots of scabby bald patches after putting down 2 lots of a granule moss killer and feed stuff:angry:
so now I should sprinkle grass seeds and sand I think, anyone know?
